Alternative to glucose test?

Yesterday I read how that sugary drink we are supposed to take for our glucose test contains a compound called BVO which is banned in Europe and Japan and is branded as a FLAME RETARDANT Chat Icon

With my first pregnancy I took the drink, but I'm wondering if anyone else has taken another route because I rather not drink it now knowing the info. I am going to ask my doctor about it, but I also read that many times doctors aren't familiar with alternatives, so I want to be little prepared when bringing this up.

Alternative to glucose test?

I had GD in my first pregnancy and took the glucose tests countless times - there was no alternative and they would not let me refuse the tests or they would drop me as a patient.

I just did a little research, and BVO is used in soft drinks, like Pepsi, Mountain Dew, Gatorade etc. it only seems to be a problem if you drink it in really excessive amounts. As long as you are avoiding the stuff generally, I doubt one small exposure is going to be harmful. But ask your doctor if you are concerned, I guess.

I have heard of jelly beans and some juices being used as an alternative.

Ugh that's discouraging. I don't know why some docs force us to consume this crap.

Yeah I mean, I rather just not expose myself or my baby to harmful toxins if I don't have to.

I've heard about the jellybeans too, I much rather have that or a different juice than the traditional one. Hopefully my doctor is ok with that.

It's been removed in most sodas except Mountain Dew but like you said, you need to consume excessive amounts to have any sort of effect from it, pretty much like most things.

Honestly nothing is going to be harmful unless you are doing it excessively. It's a one shot deal. Woman have been drinking the drink for the test for years and gone on to have millions of healthy babies.
GD is WAY more dangerous to the baby so you want the most accurate test.
Drink the drink

Alternative to glucose test?

I failed my one hour test by 5. The drink made me very sick for a few days. I asked my doctor what I could do because the three hour would be worse since it is drinking more of the drink. My doctor let me do a fasting blood work and that worked just fine.

I know someone that did the jellybeans with her second and she said it was a much better experience than the drink.

Oh wow, that's terrible. Glad you were able to have another option.

This gives me hope. I'm going to ask my doctor about them next week during my appointment.

Good luck! I believe her Dr is a part of Stony Brook OB/GYN. I am hoping that my midwives allow me to do an alternate for my next pregnancy

Do you go to Stonybrook midwives? I asked one of them at their talk/tour about using juice and she said no, they do the 2 hour 75 g glucola test. But, a midwife at a different practice told me she gives the juice test.

They probably do that because they work in the same office as MFM's who are well versed and educated on GD and the GTT. My MFM from there is the reason that practice no longer offers the one hour/three hour. It's just the 2 hour test and if you pass, you pass. If you fail, you fail. No re-dos. They are also more strict on the numbers required to pass.

Yes, I go to the SB Midwives. With my first pregnancy, I did the 2 hour test with the disgusting drink. They don't do the 1 hour.
