pediatric dentist
Hi ladies , i do not come on here often but the few times i do post i always feel your responses whether they are with or not i know i can get honest caring answers here without being judged ( have been beating myself up alot lately cause of this )
My dd is now 5 she went for he first dentist visit like a year ago and it went off perfect clean bill of health they got to do a cleaning just no x rays .
fast forward to this past visit a few months ago ( welcome to the $hit show ) well she was cool about going we practiced at home what it was gonna be like role played for weeks and when we got there she was ok ...till we got called into the room she got on the chair and they tried to x ray right off the bat this is where my story goes down hill ...x rays didnt happen i ended up sitting in the chair holding her while they do a quick cleaning and floride treatment she was getting herself so worked up she puked ( which used to be norm when she was little she was that kid who would cry till she puked )
dentist came in and said she has two cavities so we had do go back in two weeks.
again practiced read books prepped and she was cool we get there she had benadryl in her we get to the room to do sweet air and again freak out i had to sit and hold her she would breath the air properly yada yada the fillings never happened ( which in a way im glad cause then he refered us to another ped dentist in port jeff ....the app was this monday she was cool again till we got in the room she would sit in the chair so i had to hold her again the dentist was able to see she had FOUR CAVITIES !!! now im dying inside he said it could be from food genetics blah blah all i heard in my head was mom you dropped the ball you failed ur kid now she has to go through all this.
we now have an appotintment with with dr serino who was really nice and explained everything that is going to happen ...she is going to do oral sedation HOWEVER my husband and i also just found out at that appointment we will not be aloud to be in the room with her during this 1/2 hour procedure . I see both sides (obviously mine as a momma bear wanting to be with her baby to protect her is she needs or i feel she needs me ) and alos the dentist view who does not need me a non dentist or dr hovering over his shoulder while he tries to do his job and help my dd .
Im just so torn i know this needs to be done for the best interest of my daughter i just keep having these horrible visuals and dreams *( we have three weeks till her app) and i already have dreams of her being strapped down screaming for me and me not being able to reach her i know she will be drugged up and prob will not be calling for me or even remember the entire thing but i just need to hear from some of you moms and dads who may have went through this ......please no bashing i heard enough bashing on fb and im beating myown self up enough even though i know i shouldnt .
thank you for taking the time to read this long novel of a rant i just needed to get this out

No judgement here. My older DD had several cavities at age 4  She saw a pediatric dentist and they were filled with sweet air and Novocaine. Luckily she was a good patient....My youngest DD is a very difficult patient at the dentist and would be in hysterics. I always had to sit with her to restrain her. Once we even used a restraint jacket while I sat with her to do sealants. As she has gotten older she has luckily gotten better. I dont think I would be comfortable with leaving her alone to get work done if she was awake. If she has to be under general anesthesia then I understand you are with them when they go under but then leave the room. However if it is not general and she is awake I would not be comfortable leaving....

No judgement here. My youngest had 7 cavities by the time he was 5 and a root canal at 7. He's petrified of the dentist, but we found a great one who was able to do all of his work with me holding his hand.
I think you may need to research different dentists who will make the experience less scary for your daughter. This one doesn't seem like a great fit, even if he or she is a great dentist.

My daughter has had to be sedated a few times for different reasons. MRI's mostly. We almost did it with the dentist but she ended up being able to get thru it with sweet air.
In my experience - they allow you to stay with them until they are under, then you leave the room. I know it sounds scary but if you trust the doctor and remember they are never alone in the room with your child, it could be the best way to get the work done.
Does your dentist do it at the office or hospital? Our dentist does all sedation visits at the hospital and that made me feel better.
I think it's tough for anyone to say they would never allow their child to be sedated without them in the room if they never been in a position that it was medically necessary.

These are probably baby teeth that will fall out anyway so I don't see it as a dire emergency like say, an MRI that you need to get done for a medical issue.
If there is room for me in that room, I don't see why I couldn't just sit in the corner, out of the way.
I do it for her exams and cleanings.
It's not like you are in the OR at a hospital for some kind of major surgery.
It's a freaking filling

And my daughter was experiencing A LOT of pain from her cavities so it was medically necessary. But thankfully our dentist was able to get her calm enough with the sweet air so we didn't need to go that route.

My daughter ended up with 2 cavaties and 2 cracked teeth recently much to our suprise. Like you, we were VERY upset. Under no circumstance would we EVER use someone who says you can't be in the room with your child! Also, I am one who feels there are risks with sedation and we opted to have her have the procedures just with novacane and sweet air. Although it was extremely upsetting to watch, she made it through ok. I HIGHLYYYYYY recommend the Pediatric Dentist we used, Dr. Karen Verga in Smithtown. Although expensive, as she takes few insurances(not ours), to us it didn't matter as long as our little girl was cared for by the best. Any questions, feel free to FM me.

He won't put kids under anestesia in the office. Only at the hospital

lol, no. Only if there is alot of work to be done or the child is too anxious and sweet air would not be enough to calm them down in order to get it all done. which I think is what the OP is going though.

But I think she said it would be done in the dentist office- sedated or not- which is why i didn't see why she couldn't stay in the room
