Fighting Traffic Ticket - Worth it?

I debated posting this because I am the last person to engage in drama here but here goes...

So I drive the LIE and that exact spot you got caught in 2x a day 5 days a week taking my daughter to and from school and this afternoon, after reading this post, I counted the signs that mark the HOV - there were 6 starting from 2 miles leading up to it. Not to mention the very clear white markings in the lane as the HOV begins. While I am by no means "perfect" or "high and mighty" but I just don't see how the excuse of "it was an honest mistake" flies here. There is a law, you broke it, pay the fine. Sorry you were tired and distracted but couldn't anyone (even those who use the HOV illegally on purpose) try to use your same excuse? Why should any excuse be accepted?

I guess I just never understood why people think they should fight tickets they got by breaking the law.

I agree that while yes, it's a mistake, adding in all the excuses is what annoys people. Just own up to it and move on Chat Icon Hopefully you can fight it.

Not sure why my post would annoy someone! I always take a supportive approach when it comes to other women/moms, but that is just me!!!

I think my mistake was the equivalent to missing an exit! (Am I the only one who does that too????). Unfortunately the penalty was harsh.

At least my drama post is allowing for some entertainment on my commute home!!! LMAO

I am not personally annoyed, just saying how others might feel. It was an honest mistake, I totally get that Chat Icon Court is such a long process though it might be worth it just to pay. Good luck!

I'm going to be honest. I'm pretty sympathetic to the needs of others. It was the I'm a "mom of three boys comment" that got me. I'm kind of tired of hearing the "mom" excuses. Sorry! I'm sure I'll be outnumbered here.

I'm childfree. I'm tired of being put on the back burner because I'm not a mom. I'm tired of getting second choice of my work schedule because I'm not a mom. I can go on and on, but this is not the place.

Just say you were tired and missed the exit out of the HOV lane. There is no need for the mom excuse. Go and fight it and say you weren't aware. But please don't say "I'm a mom".

As to the ticket, I would fight it. The law gives you the opprtunity so might as well take the chance, even thoigh you legally broke the law. Maybe they will let you plea it down to a lesser offense.

I dunno...
Any excuse should be accepted because we are all human and make mistakes.

If this person had many tickets for similar offenses, I'd say...

But being its a first offense - I don't see why she shouldn't try to get it reduced a little. Sometimes we make honest mistakes (no matter how clear the lines and signs state it) and have to pay the price. Obviously the officer did his job and wrote the ticket.

I agree with this statement here, but this post had nothing to do with this and everything to do with someone who made a mistake. Saying shes a tired mom of three matters to HER because she was obviously distracted and tired. You or I may have said I worked 14 hours the past 2 days and I was just trying to get to my next appointment and spaced out.

it's just her "reason" for not noticing.

But I 10000000% agree to what I quoted. It's quite irritating to be seen as not as important bc we don't have children

Fighting Traffic Ticket - Worth it?

I am a frequent hov lane driver because I drive cars with clean passes and I've even made the mistake a couple of times. Also in rush hour traffic, if HOV is moving and the other lanes are at a standstill, it's not easy getting over, especially on LI where it seems like no one lets anyone in, especially in traffic.

Wow, tough crowd! When you get 4 hours of sleep (every single night), work 60 hours a week and have three kids under 4 with no family help you miss things.....like road signs! Just an overtired working mom who unfortunately had to drive due to a client emergency! I tend not to drive, but had no choice. I'm too tired wouldn't go over well at work!

So glad to be back on the LIRR today so I can get some well deserved rest!

Every single person driving can probably say how they are distracted or tired or not paying attention. If you were that tired that it prohibited you from following the law then maybe you shouldn't be driving. Ignorance of a law is not a defense. Pay the ticket and it's a lesson learned for next time.

Re: Fighting Traffic Ticket - Worth it?

I reread the initial post an nowhere did I see that the Mom of 3 boys made an excuse that she didn't deserve the ticket. She never said, I'm a mom of 3 boys I'm special I shouldn't get a ticket. She just asked if it's worth fighting.

She wasn't asking a MORAL question but more a time/money question. i.e. is it worth my time/money to use the legal avenues available to me to contest the ticket for the possibility of paying less money?

Last time I checked we lived in a democracy with laws but also with courts and the ability to plead/negotiate your case.

In an earlier response I brought up that I was doing 80 in a 50 and got pulled over. I'm not going to make an excuse and say oh I wasn't speeding. However, considering that between increase on my insurance, the cost of the ticket and the surcharge I would have been out over a grand, I made the financial decision to get a lawyer and fight and get it reduced.

. Sorry you were tired and distracted but couldn't anyone (even those who use the HOV illegally on purpose) try to use your same excuse? Why should any excuse be accepted?

I guess I just never understood why people think they should fight tickets they got by breaking the law.

I would fight it. $350 is a lot. I am also someone who jay walks, makes illegal U Turns, doesn't come to a full stop at a stop sign, and I speed too.
I am not perfect, and none of you are either. if you follow every law out there, well then good for you, you are closer to heaven than I and go on with your bad self.

Yes we are all human and we make mistakes but sometimes you have to pay for your mistakes.

Thank G*d all that happened was that you ended up in the HOV lane and got a ticket. You should not be on the road if you are SO tired. You can cause an accident and hurt someone.

Suck it up cupcake and pay the ticket. And get off the road for all our sakes.
