Do you believe that dogs really just snap?
Was reading about that poor girl who was killed over the weekend. Such a sad story and I cant even begin to imagine how horrific it must have been. That being said, do you believe that good dogs, that are healthy and treated well by their owner can truly just "snap"? I believe there must be some warning sign but its a scary thought.

I think all dogs have the potential to bite, mainly if they are cornered, hurt, scared, etc. I don't think dogs "snap" like this one did, and go from protector to killer in a second.
When I read the story, one of my first thoughts were why is the owner violating a restraining order by being there? I'd really like to know of the story of what happened before the attack.
The story mentioned that he wasn't on record as being aggressive, but that just means nothing was recorded before, not that the dog wasn't being trained or attacked before. There's a lot missing from the story (as is typical for Newsday...)

Yes. They are animals. The best animals can just flip. My dog nipped my son once or twice. He invaded his space while he was enjoying his bone. My dog was a very gentle giant, but it happened. That dog was never around kids, raised aggressively and left with a child he didn't know. It's a shame, but could have been avoided

Could not agree more. I don't think dogs just turn around and snap one day. I think people are bad at reading the signs. Sometimes tail wagging is NOT because they are happy to see you. That can also be a sign of anxiety.

Agree with this about people not reading signs. I had read that yawning or licking lips is also a sign that a dog is uncomfortable.
I cannot believe in this case that the owner of the dog wasnt charged, even with something like involuntary manslaughter.

yes, and my groomer tells me this as well. She has witnessed it with many pits in general.

Any dog can . Our chocolate lab growing up did. Had to put him down.

I am not 100% sure. But, I do feel that they give numerous warning signs that are not noticed or ignored before they bite/nip. Or they are not properly trained or socialized.

Thanks, I agree with this. I just always wonder when there is something in the news and people that are interviewed say how friendly of a dog it was etc etc.
