reflux in babies

A lot of spitting up (even an hour after eating) and crying after doing it. Making a face after spitting up. He also started crying during feeding. I remember him putting away from the bottle and crying at around 2 weeks of age. The dr. also felt my DS had it with a milk protein allergy (I think the two go together at times). He spit up a ton from an early age and it seemed to bother him.

Re: reflux in babies

we are trying to figure out if my dd has it. she is 5w and has been having painful feedings since about 2w old. She doesn't spit up her bottles, but after she drinks 1 ounce...all hell breaks loose. She starts crying, stiffens up, arches her back, turns red, kicking the arms and legs, super fussy, passing little amounts of gas. I try to continue with the bottle and she wants it but is so in pain that she cant take it and starts spitting it out as shes trying to drink it. its sooo stressful! we just put her on zantax 2x per day and switched to Enfamil AR. So far it really isn't helping. Back to the doc we go Chat Icon

she was on alimentum for almost 3 weeks but no improvement so we are back on milk based formula

This def sounds like reflux. All 3 of my kids went through the same thing. My oldest and youngest were on Zantac. And my middle child was on Axid. For some reason Zantac didn't work for her.

With DS you could just hear it coming back u, he'd swallow it and make faces.

With DD, it was much more obvious. You'd hear it, but she also was refusing bottles, arching her back, etc.

Most babies have reflux to some degree since their digestive systems are immature, but if you think it's bothering your son, def talk to the ped! What are his symptoms?

Re: reflux in babies

DD would scream 24/7 but that I attributed to gas and colic.

But one day she did what I call Volcano Vomit. She drank her bottle and it literally all came POURING back out of her mouth. It scared the crap out of me.

Then I noticed she would be arching her back and fighting the bottle while eating. Like she WANTED to eat, was hungry, but something was bothering her.

I told the ped and he said to try an AR formula. The AR formulas are thicker so they stay down better.

It helped a little, but she was still doing the volcano vomit thing once in a while.

And still screaming her head off a lot

At that point the doctor prescribed axid. It definitely helped along with the AR formula

She was on that until about 6 months old

My DS never spit up or seemed uncomfortable when eating, but he cried 24/7. They put him on zantac anyway because they thought it might be silent reflux and it didn't help at all. Eventually he grew out of the crying phase.

Re: reflux in babies

Is the crying constant?

Colic is a non consolable constant or good amount of the day cry.

If the crying is purely around feeding time I would lean towards a reflux issue

We are having save exact problem with my son. He's on his fourth formula. We are seeing a feeding specialist who now put oatmeal cereal in his bottle but we have not seen any results. We are haven a swallow study done next week. Feeding him is torture.

Both my boys had it. My 2nd worse than my first. We had back arching, you could hear it come back up and the spit smelled acidic. He woukd WAIL when he spit. The "spitting up" wasn't spitting up---it was projectile...across the room.

My first we went from Similac advance to sensitive, then added probiotic drops. Then to sensitive with rice in the bottle, to Gentlease with rice cereal in the bottle, to alimentum to alimentum with zantac meds added. That did the trick.

My second we did all of the above again (skipped sensitive and after Gentlease went right to Alimentum.) Added Zantac at that point. A pretty hefty dose. Then switched bottles thinking it was that. Then moved to Neocate formula. Even more expensive than Alimentum but thankfully covered by insurance.

The vomitting was SO bad. Finally GI wanted to rule out Pyloric Stenosis (didn't think it was that bc he was growing and gaining)and as it turned out, that is what he had causing all of the horrific vomitting and even reflux to some extent.

After his surgery things improved significantly but he still had blood in his stool so we kept him on Neocate. He still has reflux and we needed to stay on a pretty hefty dose of Zantac. Even at one he just needed his dose increased. My older guy out grew it by one.

Re: reflux in babies

7 week old DS has reflux. A lot of what has already been mentioned - spitting up, arching (stiff) back, lots of fussiness. Some crying but nothing too bad. We're lucky that he's pretty calm because I know how much worse it could be.

Dr told us to remove from breast every 5 mins to try and burp or after every ounce if bottle feeding. Doesn't matter if baby cries, just do it. Also, keep baby upright for 10-15 mins after feeding. These things seem to be helping.
