Depends on what grade you teach. M.S. or H.S. yes, I would go, elementary, no.

I hope I don't get flamed.
I don't think it's a big deal personally to be invited to the show as an audience member filled with married couples.
If you were offered to be interviewed on good morning America about something education related..that's different.
Honestly... And don't take this the wrong way, I'm only being honest because you asked... I would be so annoyed as a parent (and a tax payer) finding out (If I ever did) that you missed the first day of school to go sit in the audience of a talk show for something non-education related
I know that teachers have lives too… And they should be able to take time just like anyone in the private sector can… But I just don't think it's appropriate for the first day of school I know that teachers have lives too… And they should be able to take time just like anyone in the private sector can… But I just don't think it's appropriate for the first day of school

no way- i went to a rachael ray show and you're not missing out trust me! She is cool, and it's fun to watch a filming of a show, but you stand outside for awhile, then you sit in a room for awhile, and then the actual filming is probably like an hour tops
I agree with the above poster. I signed up for rachael ray tickets years ago, went once, and I still get emailed once every couple of months with another offer to come in. It's not that rare to get asked to come to the show

I would share it with my principal and explain how you said no but you're getting pressure by husb to go b/c of possible giveaway and would like his/her professional opinion. He/she may give you a personal day :) You'll never know till you ask.

DH and I are celebrating our tenth year in Oct, and Rachel Ray wants us to come to her show. The audience will be filled with couples also celebrating their anniversary. The only catch...it's the first day back for my students.??
I already said no, but some people are saying that it's a once in a lifetime opportunity.
Thoughts....
I am in the same boat except it's my students's second week and I don't want to miss a day so early in the year. This is such an important time. I said no as well and my friend said I was crazy. I am so sad to miss this. BTW, we celebrated our anniversary on August 19th!

I wouldn't do it. Its a TV show, not a lifetime thing. Plus, it would look bad in front of bosses/co-workers.

Off topic but where do you teach that the first day is in October? I am not really asking the exact school or district just struck me as odd since normally school starts the week before or the week of labor day.

As a parent, I would be pissed if my teacher wasnt there for the first time unless it was an emergency, birth, illness or other extenuating circumstance. I think you may be getting off on the wrong foot with parents. Not that I dont think it sucks to miss that, and as just a person to a person (not teacher to parent) that blows, but as a teacher/parent, I say no.
ETA: I work in Corporate America and I would liken it to a day where i had a big important meeting. Like today for instance, I had a meeting with our CMO, I would NEVER EVER call in that day bc it is that important of a day, but if it were any other regular day, no big deal.

Sorry if my original post wasn't clear. School starts September 9th and that's the day of the taping. Our anniversary is in Oct. I work in the Bronx btw.

I'm not trying to flame you - but your line about being a tax payer and being ticked off at why she takes a day ticks ME off. As a tax payer you get to determine why someone doesn't go to work ??? I honestly think that idea is outrageous. You wrote teachers have lives, too - but then you add you'd be pissed. That's not fair.
To the OP - don't take off. Not without tenure and a new principal. That's looking for trouble. Also - if you called out sick and were spotted on tv you could lose your job (if you're in the city).

I'm a tenured teacher and I still wouldn't miss the first day. I'd miss many other days, but not the first. Two years ago I was deathly ill the day before feb break, and I still tracked into school to show them how sick I was, and for them to actually send me home instead of me putting in for the day myself.

I have to agree with most of you. As much as it sucks to not be able to go, I can't miss the first day. My students are so excited and they would be so disappointed if I wasn't there.
I think we were going to be featured in some way, but it really doesn't matter. I could never ask my new principal ( who I just met today btw) to give me the first day off.

I'm in the private sector, and I can't take off whenever I want. If you put together the times when I can't take off, it's probably 4-6 months out of the year. But that's the way it is, I signed up for it. I could take off, but it would look really, really bad. So I don't.
Teachers and the majority of the world have the same thing. There are times when it's an unwritten rule and you're expected to be at work, even though yes you have your personal life too.
I know it's not the popular opinion, but sometimes you need to put work ahead of personal life, in order to push your career forward so later you can get that raise, get that promotion, get that tenure, etc. Then that in turn gives you your personal life.

Agree. Every profession has times that it is bad to take off. Accountants during tax season, etc. My husband in his company is really busy right at the beginning of August until another 2-3 months. Totally sucks because we can only do things on the weekend. Like we can't take a week off and go anywhere (which this year he got screwed because he put in his vacation late and there was no week in June or July he could take because so many people were out one time or another).
My point is even if he were deathly sick he would have to show up during this peak time, similar to your job with the 1st day of school and other days I'm sure (like p/t conferences, etc.).

I definitely wouldn't go. And honestly I'd be a little annoyed as a parent if I found out this was reasoning that my child's teacher wasn't there on the first day of school.

I was just discussing this with my sister, she's been teaching a long time. She is the type to go to school no matter what -- I had mentioned about the death in our family that she didn't miss school for bc she was untenured. Anyway, I just asked her and she reminded me - which I had forgotten about - that two years ago when my son was born, her Godson, he happened to be born on the first day of school! She came after school bc even though she's been teaching almost what? 15 years? Something like that, she still felt that the first day is important. I was surprised, I didn't think after all these years she would still be as passionate but she is and then she reminded me of that time when my son was born.
I will say this, I was married at the time I gave birth -- to my son's father, my now ex-husband. And he is a teacher. He had just began in a new district. His SON was being born and it happened to be the first day of school - September 9, 2013. I'll never forget it! He went to school. When someone asked how I was doing (knowing I was nine months along) he said, great! She's having the cesarean today at 1pm! They were like OMG WHY ARE YOU HERE?? But he had to be. It was the right thing to do. He was BRAND new. So, with that, he stayed and finally around 12:30 the principal herself had gotten word and came down and insisted he leave. He made it just in time :) but he would have never asked or said anything to anyone in admin. We laughed we will always have that story to tell our son! It was nice bc he actually got to meet all of his students... and then his son 
Funny - my dad, very similar, when my brother was being born he had just started a new job. It was his first or second day. Finally, my mom was going into labor and had called him at work. He didn't say anything. He killed himself to finish a XYZ and then when the boss said, my God you are killing yourself and hustling, he came clean and said, I'm going to confess my wife is in labor! He was like OMG go to her! And he did. It's funny. This was also during the Blizzard of 1978 -- so add that into the mix for extra stress

ITA. I am a former teacher - I would never miss the first day of school unless there was some personal crisis that I had to attend to. It's an important day to both students and parents and I think not showing up so you can attend a talk show is disrespectful to the kids you teach.
