I agree that it depends on industry, In the industry I used to work in, it was common to switch jobs (i used to work for an investment bank in hr/recruiting and many people would leave for another company in the same industry). DH has a union job so he will be there until he retires.

i think it depends on the industry you are in. technology industries change so often that in careers like development and technological engineering, change is just part of the culture.

I don't think it's normal to change jobs a lot unless there's a recession or you are moving up to something better (either more time or more money).
My DH has been at the same job since 2006 and he will most likely retire there.

I find that when we are looking for employees- everythig from engineers to admin help- if we see someone who is jumping from job to job too much, it's a huge red flag.
Changing jobs every 5-7 years, not a bad thing.
But every 1-2 years, ongoing, is something that raises a huge flag.
Like, why are they jumping around so much? Are they getting fired? Are they just moving from place to place to get the most money and not loyal? Will they move on us after a year and leave us high and dry?
Whenever I show my boss a resume, the first thing he looks at is how many jobs the person has had in the past 10 years. I have seen him pass right away saying "This guy jumps around way too much"
So it's a balance for sure

If you haven't reached an executive level, it's the best (and sometimes only) way to increase your salary and positon.
At a higher level though, (VP ish) you can't come into an organization at that level and leave after a year or two- there's a learning curve, getting comfortable within an organization, making contacts, building relationships, learning how the organization runs politically and how to accomplish your goals within that structure .......there's NO way someone at that level should be jumping every 1,2 years ......at least if they expect to accomplish anything during their tenure.

DH thinks he'll be with this company for a good long while, the company is amazing, but it took 3 jobs in 5 years to get to it. Every jump he's made has been a result of that company recruiting him, this company was hunting him for about 6 months (almost right after starting the last job) before he made the decision to go.
This is similar to my DH. He's in a very niche scientific market and is on his fourth job in 13 years. Each time has been because a recruiter has made him offers he couldn't refuse - not bc he was actively seeking a new job. He has gotten significant jumps in salary each time. I really think it depends on the market. (obviously I think you really can't compare gvnt jobs to private sector either on this topic)

My hubby has been in the same "career" his while life. First with the family business, and then when it was sold, he went to work for someone else. Same business. He's been in it so long, he's finding it hard to leave, because it's all he's ever known.

I think it depends on where you are in your career path. In the beginning of DHs career, he jumped a few times. Now he has been in his current company for 4+ years, and he said the only way he will leave is for his dream company to take him on. While he makes great money at his current company and is climbing the ladder fast, they aren't very family friendly, meaning they don't do family healthcare plans, and he gets 10 days off a year, which can be used as sick or vacation, which is crap. So the company he would jump ship for has everything he wants and then some, so hopefully they will have an opening in his field in the future.
DH is 32, so I do think it took a few years for him to find a good company with growth and opportunity.

This is exactly how I feel. I don't want to waste my time training & working with a new employee if they're more than likely going to up and leave (or need to be fired) after just a year or two. I understand that stuff happens & someone may have a job on their resume that was only for a short duration & that doesn't bother me, but if I see a pattern & it's happening repeatedly I'll pass.

I'm the breadwinner. I work in a pretty good LI school district, full benefits and pension, and I'm second at the top of the "totem pole" in terms of seniority/job security for my title. So, even though I'd love a change, I'll be retiring in my 60's where I started out, at age 26! I can't risk moving and then having my position cut.

My DH is in IT and he's had 4 jobs in 7 years - all of which he left voluntarily to go to new jobs because of management issues or to get a pay raise. It's common IT. He's read that if you want a raise, you have to switch jobs because companies are not looking to give salary bumps to existing employees these days. However, I also work and until recently, made much more than he did so we had at least some stability. I also insist that our health benefits be under me since I'm not switching health insurance carriers every time he's not happy at work.
