FYI - ALS challenge raised Millions in one day!

The ALS Association received $8.6 million in donations Tuesday as proceeds from the ice bucket challenge continued to pour in at record rates.

The association has begun posting daily tallies from the fundraiser on its website, stating on Wednesday that since July 29 it had raised $31.5 million. That’s an $8.6 million jump over the previous day’s tally, and more than 16 times the amount it had received over the same period last year.

“Increased awareness and unprecedented financial support will enable us to think outside the box,” the ALS Association said in a statement. Celebrities, athletes and politicians ranging from the Foo Fighters’ Dave Grohl to former President George W. Bush have taken the challenge, pouring buckets of ice water over their heads to raise ALS awareness.

The group added that it would use the donations to scale up research into the disease, including a recent pledge of $3.5 million to fund 21 new research projects, and provide more services to people currently suffering from ALS, also known as Lou Gehrig’s disease.

Can't you just say, "wow thats great!" or, I dont know... not contribute to the conversation??

Jeez why are some people SO put off by this challenge. Like, some people are just LOOKING for a problem. People got wet. Money was raised. End of story. Shut up already all of you naysayers. Jeez.

I have my opinion, you have yours. It is great all the money was raised. I just hope it is used correctly. That's all I said. No need to get your panties tied in a bunch.

And aren't you calling the kettle black. You started the problem with me honey.

The thread is "how great it is that all of this $$ was raised!!!!" and ppl post on the thread "well, I hope that its used properly" is just negative.

Again: Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon

ETA - the phrase is POT calling the Kettle black. Otherwise its just a person saying that another person is some type of kitchen equipment, which makes no sense.

It wasn't meant to be negative at all and I'm sorry you took it that way. I've just seen to many examples of when charity money wasn't used the right way. That's all.

You need to lighten up.

OMG Damned if you do, damned if you don't around here.

ETA. ALS is always a slighted/forgotten about charity because it's not a profitable disease in terms of pharmaceuticals. Only 30,000 or so people have this disease!

So the charities and diseases that are hypothetically offended or feeling left out is because they always get attention/funding. ALS never ever does.

I don't care in the long run honestly about any of this stuff people are free to do what they want I am losing no sleep over it but if you wanted this to be a purely YAY ALS raised millions in one day post why end it not so stupid ... knowing perfectly well there is already a post pages long about how people think its stupid and they are people who are offended by people thinking its stupid

If I was posting this story I would have just posted the story and left out the not so stupid partChat Icon

I think the "not so stupid part" was a reference to the other thread (ie the stupid challenge)

I am glad it's raised so much. I also like that some of my friends have brought attention to other charities that do good work.

FYI, the ALS Association has a B+ rating from the American Institute of Philanthropy, making it one a top-rated charity. They have pretty rigorous standards and now I look here before I make any donations. The site is more commonly known as CharityWatch. Here is a link to the top rated charities if interested: Link

ETA- another evaluation from Charity Navigator: Link

FYI - Charity Navigator gives the ALS Association 4 out of 4 stars in terms of the way they use the fundraising dollars.

It ain't all spent on marketing tools
