Do you always reciprocate the value of a gift?

We have friends who always have to go over the top in terms of gift giving. It's getting a little ridiculous. Do you feel obligated to match someone's gift? I do, maybe I shouldn't though. Part of me says to just give what I would typically give but part of me feels funny giving less to someone who gave me substantially more.

Re: Do you always reciprocate the value of a gift?

No.

We have family in finance.

I'm a social worker. DH is self-employed and often waiting to be paid from jobs.

There's no comparison and I don't feel the need to compete.

We CAN'T compete or we'd be behind on bills.

We're not cheap with gifts but don't feel the need to do over the top either.

Re: Do you always reciprocate the value of a gift?

No. For two reasons.

First, I only give what I can afford.

Second, I'm an awesome shopper and usually get really good deals so I'm able to get a lot more for a lot less.

The actual amount spent doesn't matter as much as the thoughtfulness of the gift.

No, we give what we can afford, that might be more than what they can afford, but the way we see it is we're not going to spend less just because they wouldn't be able to spend it, plus, they're our good friends (or family) they deserve to be spoiled.

Yeah, you guys are right. Thanks. I guess I struggle because it's not about the money, we can afford it but I don't think it's appropriate to give as much as they give. Like I said they are VERY competitive and showy people and we are not.

Even if you can afford it, I think you'd only be encouraging them. I would give what I would anyone else.

all my friends and i are pretty much on the same level when it comes to gifts. i have one friend that is just over the top ( gave me a bvlgari bag just because she felt guilty we didnt hang out in 3 months ) i clearly cant come close to her level of gifts and its understood. you give what you're comfortable with.

in my past I would give awesome gifts to this family and in return ( aside from headaches and stress) id get CRAP.. legit dollar store items, rotten chocolate, garage sale CRAP. i stopped being generous.

What we can afford. I have some friends/family who are extremely generous, that we just can't afford to match. We do what we can.

I think you give what you can give. I have a friend who spent an insane amount of money on me for my shower/wedding and I wish I was able to be as generous and she was but I can't and I don't think she did it so that I would reciprocate. I try to match what I'm given but if I can't, I give whatever I can afford.

I try to, but there are certain situations where I just can't. I also am usually pretty good at finding good deals if I have an idea of the persons taste.

I don't always match for a christmas gift or bday gift but for weddings & showers I do. I wouldn't if I couldn't.

This has become the case in my family.

I'm giving $50 gifts for every single birthday and holiday and milestone (graduation, confimation, communion etc.) and they don't give a gift bringing 6 people to my wedding...

No we have a set amount I have for everyone and we don't go over. Some people may call us cheap but I have a rediculous amount of gifts to buy so everyone gets the same amount.
