Is it better to have the pockets on the side for the sippy cup or is it better to have a pocket on the front for more storage?

My dd is 2 starting nursery school but i would like to use backpack for a few years...

If you are using it for a few years, I would get one with both. Pottery Barn backpacks have both features, and you can clip the lunch box on.

Pockets on the side.

Truthfully, unless it is a lands end bag ( or MAYBEEEE pottery barn) odds are it won't last you a few years. When my oldest was small we were lucky to make it until June. It's only now ( middle school) that bags are able to make it 2-3 years without needing to be replaced.

Also she would be swimming in a full size bag for nursery school, but will need a larger bag by kindergarten anyway.

I did back in K after my DD had used it all year for pre-k, and the strap that attaches the lunch box severed. I sew, so I was able to easily fix it. I would wash it on gentle and put it in a pillowcase or something, unless you have a front loader.
