When your water breaks...

Just curious. What is your doctor's protocol for if/when your water breaks? My doctor said to call right away. I have heard of others saying don't worry about calling and to continue business as usual.

Does your doctor give you the option of staying home or going to the hospital?

And if you go to the hospital, what do they do? I know after the water breaks, internal exams of any kind run the risk of infection...so what's the point?

I called, they checked me to make sure it was indeed my water and told me to make my way over to the hospital. In my case, I never went into labor on my own and had to be induced. They wanted the baby out within 12 hours or so to reduce any risk of infection.

my doctor said to call and go to the hospital. i think they have something like 36 hours to deliver the baby once your water breaks so they have you come in so they can monitor you and see if you need to take anything to speed up the process

my water broke around 830pm and i called the emergency line of my dr's. office. The dr called back and told me to go to the hospital.

ETA after i arrived they inserted cervadil to help me dilate since I was not dilated at all. They may also give you pitocin. I did not need pitocin because contractions came soon after the cervadil was put in.

Re: When your water breaks...

i vaguely remember them saying to call, but not to head to the hospital unless i was having contractions or if i thought there was miconium (sp?) present. either way, you should probably call and they can tell you from there.

The direction that my dr office gave me was to call them and then go to the hospital. Like someone said above you only have a certain amount of time that they will allow you to go once your water breaks.

My doctor knows I want to try to have a natural birth, so she told me that if it's clear stay home until you have 20 painful contractions in an hour. She said less progressive doctors will tell you to come right in, but that will just lead to ivs, monitoring, and having drugs pushed your way. It depends on what you're looking for.

My water broke at 11pm. I wanted to labor at home as long as possible, but also I didn't like the midwife who was on call when it broke LOL

I went to the hospital the next morning but was only half a centimeter dilated. I didn't have DS til the next night by emergency C - I spiked a fever which I blame myself for, in part because my water had been broken for 40 hours.

This is exactly what I'm thinking. But then so if contractions don't start, then what?

When your water breaks...

Mine broke at around 8am and I called the doctor who said to make my way to the hospital. I asked her if I had time to take a shower and blow dry my hair and she said if I felt okay (no contractions) that was fine. I got to the hospital around 11am after DH got a haircut and brought me breakfast. LOL.

I think you're supposed to walk to try to get things moving.

I know there's a certain amount of time, but isn't it at least 12 hours? I guess what I really want to know is why do they send you straight to the hospital if you prefer to labor at home? I understand one reason is to make sure that there's no infection....but if they do an internal after your water breaks, doesn't that increase the risk of infection anyway? I don't know...just trying to make sense of it all...

I had a midwife. I didn't go to the hospital til about 8 hours later, then went home for 5 hours, then was admitted and had DS the NEXT evening, so as long as you are under the care of medical professionals who monitor your progress, your baby does not need to be born within 12 hours of water breaking.

and yes, an internal can certainly increase the risk of infection. Once I was checked internally, and only half a centimeter, I went home to labor some more but had to come back within 5 hours.

When your water breaks...

Up until today (I am 34 weeks today) I was told to go straight to the hospital if my water broke so I could get steroids for the baby's lungs and they could try to prevent delivery for as long as possible. At my appointment today my OB said if my water breaks and it is clear and there is no bad odor then I can labor at home until my contractions are 5 minutes apart for an hour. Unless I have any bleeding. My OB recommends trying to labor at home for as long as possible.

Re: When your water breaks...

My water broke at 3am. I had a 2 year old, and wasn't about to drag her out to my parents house in the middle of the night unless the baby was crowning. Since I wasn't contracting, I tried to go back to sleep. I called at 6am. They told me I could stay home for awhile but I had to check in periodically. No baths, no sex (ha!) or I'd risk infection.

It doesn't always break before labor - with DD1 it broke when I was 6 or 7 cm in the hospital.

My Ob told me to go to the hospital if my water broke. With dc#1 I called the emergency line around 9pm, showered and got to the hospital around 10:15. Same scenario with dc#2. I was gbs + both times so I needed to go to the antibiotics. With #2 I progressed very quickly so I'm glad I didn't wait too long to go.

I didn't know my water broke. I felt like cr*p all day and my stomach hurt (not cramps). By the time I made my way to the hospital (8PM) it was 18 hours after my water broke. They admitted me around 11PM and inserted cervadil to bring on contractions (which worked). I finally delivered DS at 12:55PM on Monday (water broke and went to the hospital on Sunday). I ended in a csection because it was so far after my water broke and I spiked a fever.

I had to call right away. My water broke and they told me to come straight to the hospital. Once your water breaks that's it, the baby has to be born soon after. No waiting around when you get that gush. Chat Icon

ETA - I started contracting pretty bad within about 20 min of my water breaking. But I didn't have a little leak. When my water broke, it broke. I was gushing out fluid nonstop every few minutes. It was such fun. Chat Icon
