Losing weight before TTC?

Is anyone delaying TTC in order to drop some pounds first? I seriously need to lose some weight and know that there are health issues for both mom and baby if mom is overweight/obese -- the first that comes to mind is gestational diabetes. Has anyone been (or is currently) in this boat? Losing weight the right way is a time consuming process and putting off TTC for months (or possibly longer) to commit to weight loss isn't something I really intended on doing, but am now thinking twice. Advice? Thoughts?

Re: Losing weight before TTC?

Hi, I am currently in the same boat as you! I went to my obgyn early October and told her we would start trying the end of October and she recommended that I begin to loose weight before. I lost ten pounds and she was happy with that. I am considered over weight and at risk for diabetes. However, she said every pound counts. I am continuing to loose weight slowly but I waited until I was at least 10 pounds down. If I were you, set a goal, don't push off TTCing for many months, just set a goal whether it's 5, 10, 15 pounds and then try. If you become pregnant they might put you on a diet cause that's what my obgyn will do or they might only say to gain 10 pounds. So just watch what you eat if you becoming pregnant, eat healthier. Hope this helps! I am in the same boat as you.

Losing weight before TTC?

FYI - I'm 5'5" and 200lbs... though the way that I carry it I look more like 165-175, I'm pretty athletic as I workout regularly, and try to be very active. Not a single one of my obs/dr's has even recommended or suggested I lose weight, even now after the mc & chemical, no one, including my acupuncturist, is saying it's a necessity.

Also, you can be rail thin and develop GD, and MANY obese/overweight women I know NEVER got it during their pregnancies, it really has less to do with weight and more to do with what's going on inside.

Re: Losing weight before TTC?

I know it depends on what your Dr recommends or you but losing weight (if overweight) cant hurt as far as fertility goes...DH and I started TTC early this year and when I went back to my dr after not being in for a few years - I was shocked by how much weight I had put on since I was pregnant with my last baby....(it was about 25-30 pounds) though I was at a normal weight with lat pregnancy - so anyhow....The Dr never said a word about my weight gain - I even asked him and he wasnt worried I went home - joined a gym - work out with a trainer and changed my diet 100%-I have since lost inches and a few pounds and have lowered body fat but still no BFP - though I do feel way better and healthier so when it happens Ill be in better shape for baby growing....right? so I ay do what makes you feel good and it will help overall.....Good Luck!Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon

Losing weight before TTC?

I didn't but since getting pregnant, I've lost 20lbs. I call it the best diet ever! LOL

And as a PP mentioned, being OW/obese does not mean you will get GD just as being thin does not mean you won't get GD. It's how your body reacts to the pregnancy.

Losing weight before TTC?

while losing weight may help many aspects of your life, like pp said, you could be extremely skinny and still develop complications during pregnancy. While being overweight may affect some women's abilities to conceive, its not the same for everyone

Re: Losing weight before TTC?

I was obese prior to getting pg. I had wanted to lose weight prior but it happened a lot quicker than we thought. I went on to have a fairly uneventful pregnancy. No GD or preeclampsia or even a lot of swelling. I would like to have another but I haven't lost the baby weight. So I don't want to press me luck this time around, I want to at least lose baby weight before TTC again.

Losing weight before TTC?

We will be ttc in the next few months. I am trying to lose as much weight as I can before we start. I have been seeing a nutritionist and that has helped tremendously! I will not delay ttc just lose more though. Good luck!
