Hi,
Last year our school did Pirates of Penzance. I would say to steer away from that one as many kids didn't know it so it took awhile to get everyone on board and into the show.
I would say The Music Man or Into the Woods are both great choices.

Fairy Tales are having a renaissance these days and it puts a spin on characters the kids know well.

Are the kids good actors? Then Into The Woods. Good acting is pretty much the only way to do Sondheim well. Otherwise, The Music man but you'll need one VERY strong male to carry the whole show.
ETA: And POP is a huge no. Way too hard to sing. You'll need a soprano who has a strong High C at least.
