Well, that's your number 1 issue and I've said it for years, having taught K...K is 1 now and kids are expected to make huge progress...why it's not mandated baffles me..when we get kids in who haven't been to K at all then come straight into 1st..it can make them a potential holdover..not saying this is always the case, but it can be...K should be taken seriously..it's a foundation!

I understand being upset because 1/2 day K is a hassle but lets be honest. I don't think people moved to a district for full day K alone. Also, as long as I can remember full day K is always on the chopping block in various districts so people have to think it may go away at anytime. Other than it beign a planning hassle for a group pf parents I don't think it is such a big deal. I have lived in districts with it and without and not once was it ever a consideration when I bought my house.
FWIW, when I was house hunting, I did not seriously consider districts with half day K, so I do think it's an important factor for some people.
However, what I find most disheartening is the fact that the Board did not stick to what they presented to the community. They said that if the 7.49 went down, XYZ would be cut. Put when push came to shove, and certain groups got very vocal, they changed their plan. That's how sports, music and 50% of clubs ended up reinstated.
Only 2 BOE members voted no, and one of them said this:
"This has got to stop," Duncan said before casting his no vote. "Let's not tell people we're gonna cut items one through nine to get to a 3.14 if we're not gonna do it. "When people asked me about the budget, I said 'there's nothing else to cut.' Well apparently there was other things to cut. I told them, 'this is what we have to cut to get down to a 3.14 because we've cut everything else that resembles fat' but apparently we didn't because we have this proposal. I can not vote yes on this budget. We need to stick to what we put out to the community."
He makes a good point, IMO.

I agree. When the budget failed at 7.49% everyone on here was quick to say not to worry yet because usually they don't make all the cuts and they are just idle threats, and often that is true. It happens every year all over LI where threats are made and then not carried out after a failed budget, and money is magically found to save everything (or almost everything) that was on the chopping block. I think it is because of this some people may not have taken the cuts they were threatening seriously, and that may have impacted voting. Who knows. I do think that all school districts should really take what he says seriously. They need to stop playing games and stick to what they orginally put out because then they lose all credibility.
