meeting other moms & kids

Hi, I've been on LI families awhile but I haven't posted too much. I was just wondering if other moms go through something similar - I am a F/T working mom of my almost-two dd, and I have no friends that I get together with ever. To be honest, this never particularly bothered me that much. I am friendly with my coworkers and love spending time with my DH, but we work opposite schedules and DD and I are alone a lot on the weekends and at night. I don't mind having alone time, but lately, I am noticing that my DD really LOVES being around other kids. She just gets happier. We were at the park today and as soon as another couple of kids came onto the playground she got so much happier and started doing more stuff like going down the slide. She wanted to play with them.
I don't know, sometimes I wish I knew more people with kids so she could play with other kids more often. I am very shy and have a hard time making friends. I know when I was a child on LI my mom made friends easily just by walking down our street with me. Obviously times have changed, but I also think it may totally be me. And I don't like that my daughter is missing out because of my shyness. I don't really know how to get out of my rut but thought I'd put this out there. Thanks for reading.

I do library classes with DD and have met a bunch of local moms that way with kids very close in age to DD. I'm not one to just strike up a conversation at the park and have it turn into a lasting friendship. By going to the baby and now 1 year old programs at the library I found that I see the same moms over and over so it makes it easier to get to know them and eventually exchange numbers to make play dates.

I second going to library programs..I know ours has "playdates" one weekend day a month and other events...you start to see the same moms/dads and then you can make friends..I am also in a meetup group..what about at daycare or wherever your dd is? We've made friends there just playing outside after pickup

Re: meeting other moms & kids

Many of my working mom friends do classes with their DC's on weekends because they are not able to during the week. Why don't you join some local classes for your DD and you will meet other kids and parents that way. Likely you will also meet more working moms which will work well for playdates and such on the weekends. For your DD's age I would try ballet and gymnastics...

I feel the same way. DH and I are the only one of either of friends who has young kids. Some of our friends have much older kids but most them still aren't married. Its very hard to meet other moms with young kids. I have my girls involved in some classes but its not like there is really any hanging on that goes on outside of the class itself. I haven't tried library classes mostly because the ones in our district don't allow for 2 different age groups and I don't have someone to watch my younger dd during the day. I'm hoping next yr when my dd is in preschool I'll be able to meet more moms.

What area do you live in?
Maybe there are other moms here on LI Familes that would like to get together also.

thanks for the ideas! I'm going to check out meetup again. The last time we tried that the groups tended to fizzle out after a few months because of lack of participation. I"m no expert and I'm sure there are groups that don't fizzle out, but that was our experience. Would be willing to revisit though.

mnmsoinlove, I totally relate. We joined a mommy and me and I thought I might make friends but like you said, there really isn't a lot of hanging out that goes on outside the class itself.

Beck, good point - we're in the farmingdale area

I started making more mommy friends when DS turned 2 and liked to play with other kids. We met people by walking through the neighborhood and spending time outside mainly - and since it was last year, we had a lot of time to do it since the weather was so nice.

I also made some friends through daycare - I found some moms who had husbands in similar roles/similar schedules (DH works a lot on weekends) and we get together as well.

We also belong to a local pool club where we have met people as well and there is a working moms facebook group for the area too.

I think you can also post meet ups on here.

I'm a SAHM on the Farmingdale/Babylon border, I have twin girls who are almost 2. I have no friends with kids my age. All my friends have teenagers. I find it hard to get out because my girls are really active and run in different directions.

I'm home most of the time, during the week is easier but I have some weekends free too since my DH is doing renovating on our upstairs it's usually just me and the girls.

FM me if you want to get together :O)

I'm a SAHM, so I don't have the same situation as you. Most of my friends that have kids work FT and on weekends always have something to do. Most of their children are older then mine too, so we hardly hang out anymore.

I joined Meetup, library classes and Gymboree.

I met two different moms that live in my neighborhood from the Library, but everytime I asked them to hang out I never heard from them again.

The Meetup groups I haven't attended one of their outings yet, but I have a fear of being disliked or rejected, so I just haven't made time to go.

Gymboree, I felt like the moms there were very clicky, because they joined when the kids were much younger then we joined. Im also very shy and wouldn't approach them, but a few times I did ask questions about their children it was like a one word answer and went nowhere.

I'm very shy and since I'm older it's pretty hard for me to make new friends with kids.

I know I don't live too close to you, but I would love to meet new friends too. If you're ever available for a play date let me know. I have 19 month old boy/girl twins.

I am very shy too but I force myself to talk to people. When I go to the park, now that DD is older I just hover LOL I dont have to go ON the playground with her. . .so if I see another mom I will just make stupid conversation like "Oh so glad its nice out finally!" or compliment how nicely their children are playing (everyone loves that!)

I have been going to Music Together classes for a while and have met great moms there!

I even met some nice moms in church as we were desperately trying to keep our kids quiet lol

I feel the same way too. Most of my friends dont have young children, and my DH works alot and just recently was elected Chief in his volunteer Fire Department. I would love to get out and meet other moms with kids DS age (3). I feel like Im always with my DH family, but I would like to break away from that at some point...lol.

I am more awkward than shy around new people lol I have been in a meetup group for over a year, but I still feel awkward around them sometimes!

My son turned 2 a month ago, so we have been going to the playground a lot, but it is still awkward. We were just at one on Sat, and right before we left a guy w/a little girl came, we said hi and asked ages and I was trying to figure out if it would strange to just start talking to him - he seemed nice and had a wedding ring, but I didn't really know what to say! I am hoping it gets easier!

When DS was little I found the evening and weekend library programs to be the best. The other parents were also working and they lived in the area. DS and I are still friendly with some of the families we met back then. One boy is in scouts with DS and one girl is in his class this year.
