Tell me about Glen Cove!

DH and I are browsing areas in which to purchase our first home. We are not ready NOW, but plan to purchase this time next year. DH is out working in Glen Cove today and said he's working in a nice house that is well within our price range. We're Queens people for the most part (as is all of our family), so the idea of moving out to LI is hard for me, but the houses in our price range in Queens would be soooo much smaller than these houses and soooo much more work would need to be done. And in reality, we'd have to move again in a few years if we wanted to expand our family, which we plan to. I was just wondering if anyone was familiar with the area and had any insights. We'd both still be working in Manhattan so commuting is a huge concern of ours. LIRR would be best, but we'd be willing to drive into Queens and take the subway/bus the rest of the way in. So please feel free to share the good, the bad, and the ugly! Chat Icon TIA!

ETA: Anything as far as schools, shopping, convenience? I'm looking for any info at all. Like I said, I'm Queens born and bred so I know next to nothing about Glen Cove. Also interested in areas around Glen Cove- we've checked out Oyster Bay, Freeport, & Rockville Centre but nothing has tickled our fancy quite like Glen Cove.

Suffer the pain of discipline,

Re: Tell me about Glen Cove!

We are in a very similar situation. We are city people with a huge aversion to crossing the border to Nassau. We considered Glencove at some small point in our discovery process but ultimately ruled it out because of the LIRR. The oyster Bay line from what I understand is the worst possible line. I've heard mixed reviews about the schools. Diversity is very important to us, so if we cross the border, we want a diverse school. Some people do t like that about Glencove, but to us that is attractive like schools in the boroughs. The negative thing I've heard about the schools is that spend much of the money on ESL programs as opposed to other things. This I've heard from a friend who teaches within the district. This may or may not be important to you. We ultimately ruled out Glen Cove and anything on OB line because of distance. We are sticking with towns along Port Washington line (if we cross the border). I understand your reluctance to leave the city. What is your price range if you don't mind sharing? That can help us help you better.

Glen Cove is a city on Long Island. It's one of two (Long Beach is the other). There are some very beautiful and gorgeous areas and homes. I know several people who live in Glen Cove. I know them because they send their kids to the same private school my kids go to....So that says something about the school district (to them). My parents are in neighboring Sea Cliff/Glen Head, which is part of the North Shore school district.

As far as commute by LIRR, I agree, it's not the best location wise. Diesel line and many local stops. Most you need to change at Jamaics to get into Penn Station.

Re: Tell me about Glen Cove!

If you're going to be commuting in to NYC, i urge you to look elsewhere. The train line is horrendous.

Have you looked at Port Washington?

Thank you all! I've heard this about the schools- are we talking high schools? Elementary schools? Or all of the above? Chat Icon

Also, as far as commuting, how would it be driving into Queens? We're both willing to do that for a nice house. The one's we have looked at in Queens are just so tiny and I'm so tired of living in a closet!

I haven't checked out Port Washington, but I will! We're looking at $450k max for our budget. Obviously, the lower the better. We're also very interested in any fixer uppers. DH (or rather his father! Chat Icon) is quite handy so we don't mind DIYing to fix it up.

Have you looked into Floral Park Village. Right over the nassau border -- great town, good schools, and the train ride to NYC is only 30 mins direct.

LOVE that area, it's a little out of our price range though. There are a few houses in the area in the high end of our range, but we're definitely keeping it in mind! Chat Icon
