Do you consider Long Beach a family-friendly town?

DH and I are thinking of moving out to Long Island from Queens this summer. We don't want to buy yet, and have some specific criteria for an area. DH works in Lynbrook, his parents live in Hewlett, and I work in the city. We want to make my commute as easy as possible (so an accessible LIRR station is a must), and have his commute pretty easy too, plus be within 20 minutes or so from his parents. I'm pregnant, so we want a community that has lots of young families and also lots to do within a small walking distance so that I don't feel shut in. I've been to Long Beach a few times and like the feel of it. Also, 2 bedroom apartments in houses are common which we really like.

Do those who know Long Beach think of it as a family-friendly area? Are there other towns you can think of that meet the above criteria?

We live in Floral Park now - I would sooo recommend you look into that area. It's very family, pet, etc. oriented, the cutest little village in town and close to LIRR. Right now, our home is a 5 minute walk to the LIRR, and 30 minutes from the city. It's awesome. Happy to share more details. I don't have any leads on rentals, but I know the people next door rent out their 2nd floor which is what you're looking for, so I'm sure others do as well.

Goodluck w/ your search!

This is us too, in FP! I walk to the station in the morning, and it's a very close knit, family oriented community. We are really happy here. AKD - where are you about? We are in the west end. Would love to hear more about your experiences.

LB is great for the summer, while it has an LIRR station, in the summer especially, you are going to have to deal with a lot of beach-going commuters. Also, the area near the beach is kind of a walk to the station (maybe not an issue if your hubby will drive you and pick you up, but prego, I wouldn't necessarilly want to walk it). Also, the commute from Penn is really about 45 minutes. And it crawls . . . just something to think about!

Re: Do you consider Long Beach a family-friendly town?

I lived in Long Beach for 5 years and still currently own our house out there. I loved it and know plenty of people who live there with families but it wasn't somewhere I could picture living with kids. My daily commute was about 2 hours which is why we left but I knew I didn't want to stay out there for the long haul. It all really depends on what you are looking for. For me, I was raised out east and wanted a big yard for my kids and a quiet street for them to ride their bikes which may be possible in LB but it's definitely not the norm. That was why I couldn't picture us having a family out there. But, for my friends, they like that the beach is right there and they pretty much use that as their backyard, the boardwalk. It really depends on what you want out of a neighborhood. I will say that Long Beach is a really fun place to live though, plenty of restaurants and places to walk to.

Re: Do you consider Long Beach a family-friendly town?

I lived there for 2 years with DH, he had lived there longer with friends.

I used to commute by LIRR to my job in the city, which is where I used to work when we lived in LB. It wasn't that bad, at times you'd run into typical LIRR problems and people.

I think LB is definitely family friendly, and there seems to be a tightness of community of people who were raised there for generations.

I do need to honestly say though it can become VERY isolating in the off-season.

No one wanted to come to spend time with us then, so we spent a lot of time traveling back and forth to friends and family on the "main island".

Even going from Long Beach to DH family in Seaford was easily a 30 minute drive.

We also lived in a building that was within walking distance to the train. I don't know how convenient parking is otherwise, and people I know who lived in the West End (not sure how it even is down there post-Sandy) would constantly b!tch about the parking situation if they had to move their car, especially in the summer months.

In the winter, it also did not seem well maintained when I had to walk back and forth from the train to my apartment during stormy weather. I remember slipping and falling on at least 2 occasions.

I have known of people who have done rentals for the season. That may be an idea if you want to see if you are going to like it. That way you are not roped into staying for the full year.

This too. No way would we have wanted to buy a small bungalow with no yard, and the houses we liked on the East End were well out of financial reach.

I don't but that might be because everyone I know that lives there is either young before kids or older who are never going to have kids.

Its possible to raise kids there just liek people love havign kids in the city. I am just more of a suburbs kind of person for raisign kids - yard house, park etc.

Re: Do you consider Long Beach a family-friendly town?

Honestly IMO.. the parking alone would drive me nuts!! And its not really close to any other towns.. I feel like it takes awhile to get to a parkway and is not an easy commute coming from other parts of town.. I see it more for living with friends or more of single life .. its great in summer but raising a family there although it works for some people It would be hard for me. I do love Long Beach to visit but living there would not be my first choice family wise.. I would look into RVC .. which is close by and near a lot of parkways and stores.. etc .. great family town too :)
