Cradle cap - does brushing it make it worse?!!

DD had a terrible flakey head for a few months now. I have tried everything and nothing works. My mom said to stop brushing it but I find if I don't try to break it up every few days her whole scalp is one big stiff dry patch and she scratches at it non-stop. So I try to keep it clean and brush the flakes out every day..

Disclaimer - I am pretty sure it just needs to run it's course but I want DD to be comfy. I have tried baby oil, coconut oil, olive oil, aquaphor, eucerin, hydrocortisone cream, Mustela shampoo, Selsun Blue, tried washing it everyday, not washing it etc etc. Tried each remedy for 2 weeks or more and nothing worked so gave up. I just feel bad when she is itchy :(

I do think it just needs to run its course, but I tried just about everything with my DD as you listed except also tried vaseline, oatmeal scrubs, etc.

Then my pediatrician recommended a consistent routine of bath 4x a week with aveeno baby wash/shampoo and then afterwards lather with aveeno baby daily moisture lotion. I was skeptical and almost didn't try it but then I did and it totally worked for our DD!! Maybe give it a shot.

For our little guy I used a fine toothed baby comb and 'teased' his hair- from his scalp on up - he didn't have a full head of hair but it took a while to do it. My sweatpants were completely covered in gross flakes but it helped a lot

My ds had it pretty bad and I put a ton of baby oil on and then combed it out with a fine tooth comb while the baby oil was still on his sclap. I did this 2 nights in a row and by the second night it was gone and never came back. My ped also gave me a prescription for something, but I tried the baby oil first so I never used it.

I loosened the dried skin with baby oil. Combed it out. Then washed with selsen blue. She also developed eczema so I make sure to use a cool mist humidifier each night and gentle baby washes now since it's a full body skin issue for DD. She's been doing really well for awhile.

My ped recommended Sebulex medicated shampoo for cradle cap. It's OTC, but it's kept behind the counter.
It worked really well

Did you put the Aveeno right on their head and was it greasy looking? I am willing to give it a try.

I have don't baby oil and it didn't work. My ped did not offer to prescribe anything and said it needs to run it's course but again I feel bad when she scratches at it.

We did start doing a cool mist humidifier bc our house feels so dry and she too has eczema!

how long did you let the oils soak? I kept it in for a few hours to loosen up and then combed it.

i know you already tried selsun blue, but have you tried head and shoulders? Really worked for DS.
I don't think brushing makes it worse-- use the oil to soak in and then use a fine toothed comb.
But, I really think the H&S worked much better!

I tried leaving it alone but for both (H now and B at 6 weeks) I had to brush it. I used a toothbrush that came with the grooming kit. I think the poor thing was trying to scratch her own head the other day and all these flakes came off Chat Icon . So I just brushed them and got most off. Its MUCH better now.

Oh and Ive been using the CA baby soap. I try to wash her hair between baths too so it never gets greesy which is the caue of it. they say to use olive oil then brush and wash well. I never tried that. Putting cremes and not washing makes it worse.

My DD also has eczema but hydrocortisone works good for that. It's been keeping it from getting bad at least. Hers seems pretty mild but she gets bad spots all over. Haven't tried the aveeno eczema lotion.

I did put the regular aveeno baby lotion on her head, it might have looked greasy at first but no, not really that I remember. I didn't use a lot and i massaged it in and it might be greasy at first but then it absorbs and looks fine. I liked to do it after bath time because it worked better that way.

Cradle cap - does brushing it make it worse?!!

going to sound crazy and I know you said you tried it but use plain old olive oil

apply generously at night before bed - comb it through with a fine tooth comb - do not wash it out

next morning comb through it again and then wash

repeat for a few nights and it will be gone

My son had a little patch so it wasn't that bad. I let it run its course. It went away on its own.

Re: Cradle cap - does brushing it make it worse?!!

Baysideforever - I tried your Aveeno regimen today and DD was scratching worse than ever ugh. However it did look slightly better - less flakey but her head was a bit red. Maybe from the scratching? Not sure.

Ok and yes have tried Mustela...been using it on and off for 2 months. I switch that with Selsun blue with hopes one or the other will start working! Didn't try Head and Shoulders yet.

Olive oil did seem to work the best out of all the oils but 2 days later its back. I have left it on all diff times anywhere from 1 hr to 24 hrs. I think my kid is just destined to have a crusty head lol!

Side note I am going off dairy and curious to see if that helps with her skin issues.
