Driving in the passing lane?

What is with people driving in the passing lane when there is not much traffic on the road? I'm not talking about people who are actually driving faster than people on the right, I'm talking about people doing the same speed, going slower or doing this when there aren't even any cars in the right lane.

It's actually illegal in NY to not yield to faster traffic, even if they're going over the speed limit. Am I the only one who wishes people would actually follow this?

eta- I am wondering if people know that they're not supposed to drive in the left lane if they're not passing or if they just don't care?

I think they just don't care. I have a pretty long commute and I see this everyday and it gets me friggin nuts. I see people get on a highway and just make a bee line for the left lane as if that's the only place to drive. If I am in a particularly feisty mood I get in front of them and slow down to force them out of the lane.

See, that's fine! I'm talking about if there's someone behind you that wants to go faster or you're actually going SLOWER than the people on the right.

Im usually in the left lane, going the speed of everyone else in the left lane. If someone comes up behind me and wants to go faster, then i move over and let them go

Driving in the passing lane?

I always thought on a three lane highway you could pass from either side and that it was just on two lane roads you weren't supposed to "drive" in the left lane as that was the passing lane.

Nonetheless, I find it annoying when someone is driving slower than me in the left lane and doesn't move over to let me pass them.

In NY I don't think it's illegal to pass on the right but it's a dangerous move. I actually hate when people are going so slow that I'm forced to pass them on the right. On a car with the steering wheel on the left there are more blind spots on the right side of the car, and vice versa for a right-hand drive vehicle.

I don't think it's illegal to pass on the right only in a three lane highway - at least that's how I remember it from 39857498 years ago when I took driver's ed. Chat Icon

I remember it as three lanes you can pass on either side (whether it's safe is another story!) and on a two lane highway, the left lane is the passing lane.

Now who knows, maybe the law has since changed but that's how I remember being taught.

Driving in the passing lane?

I HATE THIS!!!!! I honestly think a lot of people just don't know the left lane is for passing and not just driving.

I'm constantly yelling at the people in the left lane that aren't driving faster in the right lane. It's also called the "fast lane" but apparently people leave their dictionaries at home a lot. If I see a car coming up behind me, I usually try to move over. Sometimes you do get those A-HOLES that swerve in and out of lanes to go around cars that can cause an accident so just be careful with those people. I'm usually sitting up the person's bumper, waving my hand for them to move over, and if they can read my lips saying "the speed limit is 55, why are you going 40!!!!"

Re: Driving in the passing lane?

It bothers me more when I'm in the left lane driving with the traffic, someone goes around me to get in front of me or pass me, then goes slower than I already was going. Chat Icon

Re: Driving in the passing lane?

This drives me NUTS!!!

My favorite is people who merge onto the highway and immediately pull into the left lane, cutting everyone off in the process, and wreaking all sorts of havoc on the flow of traffic.

I fantasize about driving them off the road. But I usually just pass them and give them a cold hard stare as I do.
