I agree there is a small chance that she did make it all up to be famous.
this is what DH and I think based on what Lana said to sister Jude in the closing scene in the hospital that goes back to her first visit. We think Lana checked herself into Briarcliffe. Hence the exchange where Jude says something about "well be prepared when you look in the face of evil it will stare right back at you" or something. We never really SEE her be committed in the beginning. Just that she faces Jude and next thing is in the hospital for being a lesbian. I think she was in it for fame and fortune the entire time.
There was an episode where Jude visited Lana's girlfriend and had her sign papers to have her committed. I liked how it got wrapped up. I didn't see Lana being evil at all. She went through so much there, she had a chance to abort her son she didn't to give him a chance to live a good life, she did eventually shut down briarcliff. She had evil staring right back at her and she shot him dead to end it. Lana deserved everything she got, so happy for her. Great season, great finale.
Yes, but I believe it was all for show. I think she committed herself and then made it all up. All we saw then was Lana's version of events, and the story SHE told the public (ie her GF committing her). I think there was more to Lana that what was at face value.

I am confused then... If she did make it up, then who killed her girlfriend ? Why would the Monsignor kill himself ??

He didnt, or he never really existed and she made the whole thing up. I think she either committed herself to get the inside scoop or was never really there at all as a patient. She met sister Jude, spoke to her, toured the place. I believe the characters were real, but actual patients, maybe kit really did kill his wife or the "friends", maybe the monsignor and Thredson all existing, but she went in to get inspiration for her novel? She did, but then to make it fiction, made half up it up, loosely based on the people she met there. Maybe that explains the aliens, it was just part of her story. I think she was a fame whore and equally, if not more evil that half the people in that place.

Exactly how I took it. I saw Lana as coming out on top. Sure she fibbed here and there for her book but not everything. Briarcliff was exposed and shutdown and the Monsignor knew he was next with Lana hounding him. Jude got a happy ending in the way of being safe out of briarcliff and loved, at peace. The aliens bit could never be explained it's always a mystery and you make your own conclusions. I thought of kit being taken to live indefinitely somewhere lol. It's crazy but I love all this stuff for me I can't question anything. What an amazing job on making Lana look old.

I will say having doubts for season 3 in how the heck they can top what they've done so far. Witchcraft can be interesting, we'll see!

After watching and re-watching the episode and reading thru the comments I think THIS is the true ending. I think that Johnny staring at Lana when she killed him is the Evil staring back at Evil.
I agree that Lana was evil, she would have stepped on whom ever to get to the top!

I agree with this. I believe everything happened and she didn't make it up. She wanted the fame and money.
"I do hope you know what you are in for. The loneliness, the heartbreak, the sacrifice you will face as a woman with a dream on her own".
and kit's children she's godmother to them both. Thomas is a professor at harvard law and Julia is a neurosurgeon.
I thought it was a great ending. Like father, like son.

What happened to her first partner who died at the hands of Dr Threadson?
I was pondering that A) it was all made up by her and B) Dylan McDermott's character wasn't even really her son then but made that up in his head after meeting her in the schoolyard as a young boy. Not that it proves anything but both Thredson and Lana's eyes are very brown and "Johnny's" were blue.
But then there are a lot of things that sway me back to thinking it was all real, like the existence of Kit's kids at all would indicate that all the storylines related to Kit were true.
Who knows???

I'm so torn! I do remember at the end of Lana's interview they panned her mantle, and there was a photo of Thomas & Julia as babies in a red wagon.

Also what do you make of the 1964 flashback at the very end?
I took it to mean they were all evil in some way and it had a snowball affect on those around them.
When sister Jude was talking about ambition and then said if you look in the face of evil it will loom right back.... They zoomed in on judes face ( being she was the evil one who locked Lana up and started her whole ordeal) and then Jude looked at the statue at the end. Symbolizing the very thing - her devotion to monsignor and briar cliff that - that made her evil
