My boys have gone to Presbyterian Community Nursery in Massapequa - they are having an open house this weekend if you are interested.

A coworker just mentioned that all Lutheran churches offer inexpensive preschool.

St. Luke's is very affordable. You also have to pretty much camp out the night before registration to get your kid a spot.

I am a Peanuts mom and love it! A friend of mine has a child in St. Luke's and is leaving after the disgusting behavior and threats made by parents on registration day. I am so appalled that adults who have children of their own can treat another parent that way! And the school did not assume any responsibility for it. Very sad that parents are allowed to be bullies these days.Chat Icon

I personally am not a fan of st Luke's. I sat in on classes when looking for a school for ds and I never went back! And the horror stories my neighbor told me were appalling. Not trying to scare anyone but I would never send my kid there. Many people love it there

St. Lukes is a great school! My kids have learned so much there. Yes, registration is a nightmare but you do what you have to do - and if that means getting there ridiculously early, you do it. I did check out Peanuts also. Not a fan.

Re: Does anyone know of any afforable pre-schools?

A coworker of mine has their 2 or 3 year old at Peanuts, and isn't a fan either.

When I was looking at both St Luke's and Peanuts, I heard a lot of negative and positive.

The crazy registration is over with and there are some spots left in the different programs, so if you aren't picky, you don't have to wait in line. They also have a waiting list.

I don't know what you mean by do what you have to do but my friend went there early (not sleeping in the parking lot) and was bullied and verbally assaulted by the parents who spent the night there. They had the balls to make up a list of their group of friends and tried to tell the other parents who didn't spend the night there that if they are not on the list they had to go to the back of the line. Disgusting. When the school didn't accept their list they continued to harass my friend and many others threatening to slash their tires, beat them up, calling them lazy b*tch@s. This was also fathers of children...one told her the lord told him to sleep in his car and because she didn't that karma will get her. I would never ever ever want my children to be near parents or children of parents like that! And the school did NOTHING about it. It's a shame but children who are bullies probably stem from parents like that!Chat Icon

I've never heard or seen any of that type of bullying so I feel very badly for your friend. As far as doing what you have to do - I meant by sleeping overnight. A list going up and people sleeping there has been going on for yearrrrssss. I knew this about the school way before I even had kids there. The school has nothing to do it but 95% of all parents follow and accept the list. For those who show up late and the get in a huff that they can't register for what they want and then try to cut -you better believe some parents are going to say something. It's those parents that cause the chaos. I personally wouldn't want my kids in class with the people who try and cut the line and who think they're better then the other 100+ people on line. It's disrespectful and pushy and reflects badly on their kids.

I surely hope you are not trying to turn this around on innocent victims. It wasn't just my friend, it was other parents who showed up in the morning when it was time for registration as well and got on line, at the back of the line...EARLY. It is in no way shape or form even remotely their fault for immature bully parents who try to make their own rules trying to tell an adult to go to the back of the line because they weren't on a special list that someone who doesn't even work at the school drafted up. Like I said, the school didn't accept the foolish list - they took it and threw it away - that's when all the "tough" moms and dads, who mind you are at a RELIGIOUS school verbally assaulted and made threats to several parents who showed up and got on line like they were supposed to. There was no cutting with my friend and several others and it's pretty insulting that you would insinuate that after the terrible threats and assaults those parents had to go through. They are lucky the police weren't called. And the ones who stood up to those parents were harassed even more. We are all adults, parents most importantly and nobody has the right to speak to another parent that way regardless of their "religious" views, self entitlement etc. Several parents left the school that day because of that incident and will not be returning. I'm sure that's exactly what the bully parents wanted. I hope those children have good teachers who teach them morals. But I don't feel they will learn those morals there since the owners of the school did nothing about it.

As I said, I feel horrible that this happened to your friend and the way she was spoken to. I don't even understand why she was harassed if she went to the back of the line after all the numbers were done or whatever number she was. You may think the list is foolish but many others don't and while the school doesn't have anything to do with the list the parents follow it in an orderly fashion. Luckily I've never had a problem, but then again I've respected the way things are done. If I didn't like it I would go elsewhere.

Re: Does anyone know of any afforable pre-schools?

So parents get to make up rules that everyone else has to follow? St. Luke's does not recognize lists AT ALL, EVER. First come, first serve. If anyone threatened me like that I'd call the cops and they would have more to worry about then preschool registration. Who made the "list makers" boss? Just because they think they are right doesn't mean they are so, and that behavior is disgusting. I hope that parent was denied registration just on his behavior alone. If you call St. Luke's they will tell you they do not recognize a list, at all, ever.

Thank you! The behavior is disgusting and I cannot believe another parent (several in this case) would ever treat parents that way no matter how much they feel they are in the right. Unfortunately those parents were not asked to leave and when my friend spoke to the owners they told my friend "we are not responsible for how other people behave - if you can think of a better system let us know because this has been going on for years". Okay so it's okay for her to be afraid to walk to her car after she registered???? Unacceptable. They lost several registrations that day because of that behavior - but like I said above, I'm sure that's exactly what those bullies wanted. They should have been kicked out and I would have called the cops!

And you are correct St. Luke's does not accept the list - that's why the parents got their panties in a bunch and tried to scare everyone off the line when the list was thrown away. Pitiful.

It is pitiful, and Barbara would not have put up with that. My kids have gone to school and camp there for 12 years, never would I have imagined that nonsense happening. The previous poster is wrong, that list is NOT right. I'm not sure who these parents think has given them authority to create their own "order" sounds like nothing but chaos. I have one more to go through preschool I would never have thought about anything other than St. Luke's but hearing this I think I had better consider my options (or else consider those who my child would be exposed to). Sad, really sad, because Joan and Nancy and all of the other teachers are nothing short of exceptional.

Re: Does anyone know of any afforable pre-schools?

I live in a different part of LI so I'm not familiar with these schools, but clicked on this post just based on the title.

The curiosity is killing me-- what is the deal with this St. Luke's? Is it more reasonable than other schools? Does it offer something other schools don't? Is there some sort of prestige factor?

I'm just asking because my children both attended preschool at a local Catholic school, I've never heard of such a stampede to register. I mean, the programs the school had were popular and filled up pretty fast, but I have never heard of parents camping out or making "lists" or harassing others just to get in.

My friend was happy with the school and her DC's teacher - it's a shame for the school that because of those parents they are losing business.

Why would the parents be handling this list and not the school? I don't understand that.
