This was brought up a few months ago with Papa John's and some other places and the backlash against the businesses making these claims was very, very strong.
I can't comment on the link you posted because it takes me to a search engine site. But this isn't the first time this has been brought up in the media.

Yeah my comment still stands. I heard about this one Wendy's franchise a few days ago. And the backlash against that franchise on twitter etc. was already very strong. The companies pulling this crap are damaging their own reputations by claiming they are going to take it out on their minimum wage employees. It's silly and designed to make a political statement but in the end they just hurt themselves.
When Papa John's pulled this basically EVERYONE was like "we will gladly pay the extra few cents for a pizza over you cutting your employees' hours." It was just dumb.

Obamacare YIKES!!!
The problem is that many of these restaurants are franchised, and small business owners are being impacted very hard by this. Sure they have the name of a huge corporation backing them, but they are still small businesses, which are already struggling. The costs for them need to be made up somewhere--this article does a good job of explaining that.

Yes many of these places are franchised run so while they have a big company name it is just some small business person trying to run their business. They have to uphold the big company standards and policies but still cater to their local area. I feel bad somewhat for both sides. Not fair to those hard workers who need the insurance and deserve it, but in many cases the franchise owners are not millionaires and struggling to keep their stores open (but sometimes they are well off and they own several). Some might be doing this to keep their doors open or keep from laying some off. Of course some are also just greedy. Some franchise owners were people who worked hard at these same restaurants ended up in their management and saved to open their own store.

They keep you just a hair under the hours required to be considered full time with benefits.

i am very concerned. i think we are going to see this happening every where. All businesses are going to cut hours down and no one is going to be able to find a full time position.
i totally see the flip side of the coin here. As mentioned before, these are essentially small businesses under a big name. The cost of owning a franchise is hundreds of thousands of dollars if not more.

Most can't and won't. Its usually a full time thing only. I work part time and I wouldn't buy the benefits since I have it elsewhere. My hubby is full time he won't buy it because I cover him, but his boss still has to find and buy some. Thankfully he's so small he can ignore this because if not, where do you really think that money comes from?
Even in NY when I was job hunting its always salary PLUS benefits because benefits ARE a type of income.

franchises are not small business owners . if you ever looked at what is required to own a McDonald's, a Wendy's, a Dublin donuts, you would know that you need massive amount of liquid cash plus other assets and most if not all require you to own multiple locations . whomever at Wendy's is not a small business owner . I would have more respect for this grievance if it was a true mom & pop shop complaining .

greedy business owners with personal political agendas will bring down the economy. And once the job market gets a little stronger smart business owners will get good employees who will gladly leave other firms for benefits.
