Can someone explain this to me?
One of my close friends called me today and told me that her brother was struck and killed by a subway car on New Year's Eve. She was obviously hysterical and I couldn't get the full story, in fact it seemed like she wasn't 100% sure of it either. But here is what I can't understand, how was this not on the news? Why can't I even find an article about it?

I'm sorry for her loss, that's so sad
I don't think they put it on the news every time someone gets hit by a train (especially if they fell accidentally or jumped), I know several time my train to work has been running late & I heard from others that it was because of someone getting hit.

I'm just do heartbroken for her and her family. They just buried their grandma in November and now this. They are really tight knit and they are just devastated and shocked right now.

DH just told me about a girl who fell on the tracks NYE and was killed. Apparently they are pretty common occurance, which may be the reason why it wasnt in the news

As pp said not every subway death story makes the news. There would be too many of them. So sorry for the loss. That's terrible.

I have a friend who is a MTA train conductor. He told me that on Dec. 14th he struck a man that was sitting on the side of the tracks. He wasnt pushed, he didnt fall. Just was sitting there. It didnt make the news. He also told me that that most train deaths do not make the news.
I am so very sorry for their loss

I'm sorry for your friend and her family.
As others have said, these deaths are not uncommon. I have relatives who work for the MTA, one is involved in these investigations and he's called out more often than you'd think.

Yeah, I think the news mainly reports on incidents where foul play is involved, not in purely accidental cases.
Very sorry for your friend's loss.

How horrible.
I am sure though not all of this stuff makes the news, especially if there was a thought that it could've been a suicide, the person was homeless, or had no kind of ID on them.

Yeah, I recently saw an ad on the subway saying there's x number of deaths by people getting hit by a train. (I think it was around 200 annually.) We certainly don't see them all on the news.

Didn't read all the comments but my hubby and I knew about this on New Years day. Something about a guy/girl stumbling around 5am and fell onto the tracks and died.
Also said subway deaths are not uncommon and average about 10 a year.
I'll have to get the link to the story we read.

I have a cousin that commited suicide in 1990 I think in front of bethpage LIRR train. This also never made the news. They may have kept quiet until they could verify body

My brother was killed by a subway train. It didn't make the majority of news outlets, only one and it was a small blurb because it delayed the line it happened on.
