BTDT- Anyone have a soft marker at their Level II ultrasound?

I have a meeting with a genetic counselor on Friday because at my level II last week, the doctor saw a soft marker for Downs. Does anyone have any BTDT stories for me to share to let me know what could happen? I'm really in the dark as to the whole thing.

Keep your chin up. Soft markers are only indications there MIGHT be something wrong.

BTDT- Anyone have a soft marker at their Level II ultrasound?

When I was pregnant was DD the technician found a Echogenic intracardiac focus (EIF) while doing the ultrasound at around 18 weeks. It was a small bright spot seen in the baby’s heart on an ultrasound exam. The doctor told us it was a soft marker for down syndrome. I needed to have another ultrasound done by a specialist. He was not able to find the spot. DD was just fine. Waiting for the ultrasound was the most difficult part of my pregnancy. It was hard for me to rationalize there "might" be something wrong..you just think worst case scenario. Hope everything goes well at the meeting!

My son also had this on his heart when they did the 20 week anatomy scan. My OB reassured me that it was not an issue since there were absolutely no other soft markers and all other tests had been fine. We didn't see any specialists or a genetic counselor. It was offered, but my OB said it was up to us. We waited until our growth sono at 30 weeks and the spot was gone and our son was born completely healthy.

yes, i had the Choroid Plexus Cyst soft marker. My DS is 1 and is perfectly fine!!! It is stressful to hear from the doctor, but i think as long as everything else is normal and there are not multiple markers you are fine. Try not to stress and enjoy the pregnancy Chat Icon

I did with my 3 year old. They thought they saw something on her heart, but when I went for an ultrasound with the perinatologist they saw nothing. She is perfect, nothing wrong with her at all.

I had this too, as well as a two vessel umbilical cord and an elevated risk for downs from my NT Scan (1 in 293). I was a wreck for weeks. I had to go to a high risk for a follow up level II and fetal echocardiogram and at that apt, they said the cyst cleared up, which was good, but confirmed the two vessel cord and recommended I have an amino and the maternity21 test, all of which I declined. My DD is now 4 wks and absolutely perfect. All that worrying for nothing! As hard as it is, try to remain positive and try not to stress or freak out. Good luck!Chat Icon

with dd in 2008, they found an echogenic foci (spot on her heart) and a space between her toes.

I had to go to high risk and see a genetic counselor. She took all of our info. Anything we knew in our families of genetic diseases and such. Then she did an ultrasound.

She saw what the sono tech did and since we didn't the initial 12 week bloodwork there wasn't much she could tell us except for give us some numbers and possibilities. we could have gone on for amnio but the risk of that and losing my child outweighed MY decision on the possibility of her have downs. We didn't do anymore testing. We were ok with whatever happened. I was nervous the rest of the pregnancy but she is now a very happy, healthy, 2 1/2 yr old. Nothing was wrong.

She did have heart murmur which they said is nothing and could close up on it's own!
I don't even know why they use markers any more. They are before time even existed, haha. From before the machines we have now which are so good and really clear.

Now with #2 and different doctors and sono's, the guy told me they are fading out the spot of the heart for downs. He also told he doesn't even Asian women about b/c almost every pregnancy has one.

Good luck! Try not to stress, especially if that is the only thing they found. Most times you need more than 1 thing to go on with further testing

Thank you everyone for sharing your stories. It is so hard to hear the doctor not say that the baby looks "perfect" which is what we heard when we had the 20 week scan for my DS 3 years ago. I think we will move ahead with the MaterniT21 test tomorrow just so that I can have peace of mind. We will love her all the same either way, but for the rest of the pregnancy, I just need to know. I am so happy to hear that things worked out for all of you! I can only hope that I have the same result. Chat Icon
