What to have at home for a new puppy?

We just picked out our new puppy and she comes home either Monday or Tuesday-yay!!

Now we're trying to prepare for her.. It's been 6 years since I've had a little puppy

This is our list so far:

Food bowls
Doggie bed
Leash
Collar
Tags
Toys
Snacks
Food

Anything I'm missing?

Thanks!

Not necessary but if you are restricting the puppy to a part of the house, a baby gate. We have two that we put up so when we go out our puppy only has access to living room and kitchen.

Definitely a crate. I wouldn't even introduce the dog bed to the puppy yet until they were housebroken a little and can associate not to use the bathroom where they sleep.

Like the previous poster mentioned, do not let them get the run of the house right away. Crate training is the best even if it feels cruel at first. My dog is 2.5 and he absolutely loves to nap and play in his crate in addition to his doggy bed!

I couldn't agree more. I was resistant of the idea of a crate, but my girl looooooooves it. We gave her her toys and treats on Christmas and she grabbed them and ran to her crate to enjoy them. Plus it's VERY helpful when trying to potty train your pup!

Also, there is a bitter apple spray. If your dog starts to chew you can spray it on whatever it is.

My dodg was chewing on the leggs of furniture.

i forgot about bitter apple!

thanks everyone!

we have wee wee pads, and i'm ordering a gate right now
i've crate trained dogs in the past, but for now we've decided not to crate train her

our pick up date was moved, and we're now picking her up on saturday-we can't wait!!!!

I'd definitely do a crate, I'm not sure if there are reasons you decided not to crate train, but it was 100% effective for us. Our dog who is know 3 only uses the crate ocassionally, she'll go there for a little rest every so often, but early on it was crucial!

If you're keeping her in the kitchen and are defintely not going to crate train her pick up a second gate so her puppy teeth don't do any damage to your beautiful table!!!

If Darwin taught me anything when he was a puppy (other than to always put my shoes away) it was that in the battle of puppy teeth vs. wooden furniture, puppy teeth will always win!! Chat Icon
