What about this is a MEANINGFUL contribution?

And yes, one guy with a handgun is certainly a match for another entering the school with a bullet proof vest and an automatic weapon.

My ONLY hope is that this DISGRACE of a "contribution" gets those riled up already about this, even more fed up and spurs more people into action, puts more pressure on Congress.

I saw this quote on a blog I read and this is all I can say...
"I always agree that self defense with a gun is a John Wayne induced fantasy. The truth is the shooter’s mother was killed by a gun she owned. There’s no room to say “if she had a gun she could defend herself”, because she did and it killed her."

Couldn't agree more. I mean these were legally owned guns that were used on children. In what asss backwards universe is the solution to this problem MORE guns?

I agree, if this happens in my kids' school I am already thinking I will be very close to homeschooling, or packing my shit up and moving! I am praying for this country.

Yes- It seems like a lot of people buy guns because they anticipate someone breaking into their homes in the middle of the night to kill them. But unless your gun is under your pillow, or in your nightstand (and not locked up securely) it won't matter because the so-called killer won't wait for you to unlock your gun. I feel like a good home security system is your best bet and safer for your family.

Why do people think the solution is more guns?

If you have had enough, PLEASE check out the Brady Campaign - they are the country's largest gun control advocate group but have NO WHERE NEAR enough power or mone to go up against the NRA. They need our support.http://www.bradycampaign.org/

Re: NRA Conference

Because its a deterent.

All crimes are done by oppurtunity. If you can't get INTO the safe you won't try. but if you have one bullet you can, so you do. Then if it takes 2 blocks of C4, you'll try but if you die and can't get to the money, you won't.

You won't walk into a police station with a gun to kill the guy way in the back because you KNOW you'll never make it. Yes, I know there's cases where people HAVE done just that.

This proves the point that madness can NOT be contained. But the NRA can't and SHOULDN'T be in charge of mental health. But yes, the guy up front with the gun vs the gun with the full armor would be ONE man who can lock the school down. ONE man who could with his gun let everyone inside get cover, run, escape live.

It is what we ask our troops to do. And I see them as a meaningful contribution.

(to add I have NOT seen the video or the conference or read CNN)

Ummmm, our troops ARE NOT the same as an armed guard at a school

Also, if we become a nation where our children need to have guns at school to keep them safe, this is maybe a place I no longer want to live. Honestly.

So the guy who breaks into my home who knows that cops dont miraculously appear at my front door will ALWAYS run away? I don't think so.

Why do people think we want MORE guns instead of the fact we just don't want LESS guns?

BUT i will go further I DISAGREE with the FB friends who post that EVERY single confrontation with such people ALWAYS ends with the appearance of another gun, each and every single time a gun shows up in the hands of an off-duty cop, a civilian, the military, the cops the shooter commits suicide or is stopped. yes thats true, but I HATE that argument for justification.

And yes, we all agree no one wants an assault full automatic assault rifle.

But I didn't think it was a big deal that there was more security in Penn Station post 9/11. I didn't feel it was meaningless to have those assualt weapons in plain view every day. Yes, I felt safer, yes, I think wrong doers thought twice. Yes I feel a gun in the RIGHT hands can be a deterent without every being pulled.

You don't bring a knife to a gun fight.

Re: NRA Conference

More guns is not the answer. If only it was as simple as putting armed guards in every school. Sorry that is not the answer. What happens when one of those armed guards goes nuts and shoots up an entire school?? Who will stop him then??

Our poor children, so sad that this is the world they have to grow up in.

Sorry but we've had armed guards at schools for a VERY long time. My High School was the last school in San Antonio to get an armed cop. Every High School and Middle School in San Antonio has an armed cops on campus. Each district has its own police dept.

Each and every single one of them.

Our elementaries do not. This is something our city is looking to change because of this tragedy.

Do we have shootings? yes. There was a teen who died after being shot in a scuffle with a cop. Do we have student shootings? I honestly am not aware of any but I've been out of town (literally) for 10yrs or more since they started the practice.

Are we safer? How can you tell. We are safe until the monster knocks on the door.

By armed guard I mean trained professionals. Not just Dad with a gun.

Ironically I dont believe we have metal dectors in any of our schools.

Honestly, If they put armed guards in my child's school she would no longer attend. That does not make me feel any safer it actually makes me feel worse. You can't compare it to Grand Central and Penn Station after 9/11..very different issues and emotion.

Because we currently don't have an armed guard stationed at every school and that's what they are calling for.

And I have to disagree that guns are always a deterrent. If someone is mentally disturbed, they can't always reason out the consequence of their actions, so a gun would be no deterrent to them at all. Then there are those who just want to "go out with a bang" and fully intend to not make it out of these situations alive. For these reasons, "a gun can be a deterrent without ever being shot" is an invalid arguement to me. And THOSE situations are the ones that scare me the most. I don't claim to have a solution, but I also don't believe this is it. There has to be some reform of mental health care.

just because they are a trained professional does not mean they can't snap one day and then what? Who;s going to protect our children then??? This is NOT the answer to this problem. It would never happen anyway...state and school budgets would never be able to afford this.

This I agree with a MILLION Times over!!! and it should be our focus. People confuse the two topics. Guns, walls, armor, bunkers.. NOTHING works against the face of madness. History has shown that over and over again.

In San Antonio, in Texas, in the state with some of the least rigid gun laws, you feel the need to have an armed guard at every school. While I'm over here in Queens, NY and I don't feel that need.
