How do I feel....I think it's a great idea to encourage kids to get involved with the community and knowing people need help.
I also feel like this is also a great opportunity to explain that helping others doesn't have to be through a school or a big group. It's great to donate your change, but there are other ways to help too. Then I would explain all the things you do to help through the year and encourage her to decide what she wants to do. Does she want to collect the money and do the piggy bank? Does she maybe want to split in 1/2 and save some to buy a toy for Toys for Tots or would she like to just buy a toy to give to someone who needs it. I don't like the idea of A- forcing people to donate to an unknown cause, and B- making it a game. You give because y ou want to not to be the best. Of all the battles I would sit this one out. Take $5 to the bank and get a roll of pennies, nickles, dimes, and quarters. have her put them in and then go do something else for a child or family in need.

Re: How do you feel about this school 'project' that AJ's school is pushing through???

I think it is a "pick your battles" sort of thing and this would not be one of mine even though I might have the same doubts as you. I am doing the exact same thing at home and while I do know where the money is going, what I am teaching my son would be the exact same thing if it was a school project. I am not huge on forcing kids to compete at a young age but the truth is that there will often be a kid who has more than the others. Kids will notice and the other kids have to learn to handle it. I think that 4 year olds can accept that and move on with their day, maybe more easily than many adults can. I wouldn't have a reason to give my kid a higher volume of coins. Perhaps the teachers can explain that quarters have more value than pennies.

i would never question this.
i force charitable acts on my children all the time.
we talk about it, they do it...i tell them how proud of them i am and how they made a difference.
to me, all these behaviors must be taught and learned.

Re: How do you feel about this school 'project' that AJ's school is pushing through???

The 2nd grade teacher in my school does the mite boxes for a shelter I think it is. She gives them to all the classes to hand out to their students. I just sent it home and said if you have extra change laying around and would like to donate it that is fine. I really did not push it this year as we already did a collection at Thanksgiving for our parish food pantry. My students parents also collected items for the stocking drive from pay it forward with Jackie. I didn't want to add another thing that they would have to donate too. I think it should be optional and they shouldn't be forcing you to collect money. This is a bad time for many especially after the hurricane so they should not be wording it that way. It should be optional and if you would like to donate them feel free to.

Oh and here's the new clause in our handbook:

Therefore, _________ reserves the right to dismiss or to deny the privilege of reenrollment to a student if we reasonably conclude that the actions of a parent or guardian impede a positive and constructive relationship or otherwise seriously interfere with the accomplishment of our mission.

You post a lot of info about your daughter online and you should draw the line at the name of her school. I would go back and edit your post.

You should edit yours as well, since you quoted it and left it in.......not being snarky.....

Off topic, but I was equally surprised at how many people left their last names visible in the "holiday photo card" thread. Many people were wise enough to photoshop it out, but I could not believe how many people now have their full names out there on a completely public forum.

I have an issue with the presentation.

Piggy bank for a child in need is cute. But you are going to hand a family in need a piggy bank with change in it ? How much change could she possibly collect.

A family in need is going to get spare coins they would now have to count up. What is there is only .75 cents in there ? How will that family feel ? Will it be controlled how much each family gets ? I just think coins are insulting.

Now the child has a piggy bank that she will be asking parents for change for. My daughter always looking for money for her piggy bank. Great gift... has kids asking the parents for $ they dont have.

Good intention but I dont think it's a good plan.

You've complained about a lot of other things, so I would just let this go.

To me the project is teaching a child how to be charitable and give to others. I also see the message conveyed that doesnt matter how small or grand the help is, its about helping others. I think people are over anlayzing it and as long as that is conveyed to your child then it is a worth while project.

Honestly I wouldnt mind because thankfully I can put money in it. However I would feel very bad for those who couldn't so based on that I would say this probably isnt a good idea.

I can see how its nice to teach kids about "people in need" but I also see your point how it forces the parents to donate.

Since you are planning to stay to June, I'd suck it up, get a roll of pennies and a roll of nickels and just keep the peace.

Exactly this. I don't even remotely see the big deal.

I feel like why wouldn't you want to donate... They aren't asking for big amounts... Just some spare change that we all have lying around... I see no big deal with it.

I agree! My DS's school did something very very similar last year (when he was 4 in Pre-K) but the whole school did it (Nursery- 3rd grade). Instead of a piggy bank they just brought their change in ziploc bags. I actually thought it was a wonderful thing and taught a wonderful lesson. All the kids poured their change into a big container and then that container was combined with the other classes. The money went to buy presents for families that my son's school had "adopted" - his school was catholic and they worked with another catholic school in a poor diocese that had identified families in need.

This is what I will tell you about how it went down - none of the kids were competing or focused on the individual bags of change - they were only focused on the pooled money - how much it was all together and what they were going to be able to buy. They were all so proud of themselves when the family sent thank you cards with pictures to the individual classes. I think it is all in how the teacher presents the project to the class. I know my son really benefited from it - when he talked about it he never said how much change he had in comparison to anyone else all he said was how much money they raised and what they bought for the kids who would have gotten nothing otherwise. So whether you send in a dollar or $1000 I dont think it matters and I am not sure that is the idea behind this - I think its a charitable thing WHILE being a lesson for the kids.

Montessori is a type of school, not the name. It's usually "Smithtown Montessori" or something like that. There are hundreds of Montessori schools. Also, op lives down south, not on LI (how most lifers "realize" who each other are/find each other).

Op, leaving in June? It would take a lot at this point for something to trigger me bothering to complain.
