Does your baby even have teeth yet? If they dont have teeth I would not have my baby injesting flouride. Its even debatable if flouride ingestion is even beneficial when kids do have teeth...from what ive read, flouride is beneficial with topical use. So if it were me, script or not, I probably wouldnt give it...but I have never given my ds flouride vitamins anyway (hes almost 3 & has never had a bad dentsl checkup to date..knock wood).

Fluoride drops at 6 months

Yes, DS started them at about 6.5 months by the time I got the script filled. I have HORRIBLE teeth (thin enamal) and try to do everything to strengthen DD's and DS's. They both had teeth popped through at that point, but if they didn't I would have started it anyway because the teeth are formed (or finishing forming) under the gums.

Re: Fluoride drops at 6 months

yes, our pedi gave it to DS at 6 months too. It is based on the county you live in (I believe if you are in nassau, there is no flouride in the water, therefore they give you the drops, if you are queens, there is flouride... ) something like that. lolChat Icon

Yes ped prescribed them but DS doesn't have teeth yet and trying to get the vitamins into him is a nightmare so I stopped trying for the time being

Re: Fluoride drops at 6 months

Hi Ladies - not a frequent poster, but I thought I could clarify as a dentist..

There are 2 different types of flouride delivery and they have two different purposes:

Systemic (vitamins) - this type actually changes the structure of the tooth structure to be harder and less 'friendly' to penetration by cavities. This can only take place while teeth are forming. Your adult teeth start forming a couple months after birth, hence why it is important to have flouride exposure at a young age. Your baby teeth are formed during pregnancy, so there is no benefit to them.

Topical (toothpaste, fouride treatments, etc) - this will not prevent cavities, it will only reharden tooth structure where cavities have started.

Yes, we started at 6 months. DS got his first teeth at 5 months so no problem there!

Yup! At DS 6 month check up he had his 2 bottom teeth in already. The ped gave us the Rx for his vitamin w flouride. He said that the water in Nassau/Suffolk has a horrible flouride supply, if any, so he likes to start them at 6 months. DS takes it daily but I feel horrible giving it to him. It looks like betadine and tastes god awful!
