Allergies and vaccines
Ds 1 is allergic to dairy, a more serious allergy to eggs and a really serious allergy to certain tree nuts. His drs know this. At his two yr well visit last week was the first time anyone ever mentioned not getting a vaccine due to an allergy...they said no flu shot because of the egg allergy but he almost got it. The nurse at the beginning of the appointment was trying to convince me to get it but I've always been anti flu shot for my own personal reasons. I had to say no several times. The dr comes in and sees I declined and again mentions it and I say no. Later in the appointment I brought up something about one of his allergies and he goes, oh yes, I see here in the chart he's allergic to eggs, how allergic so I tell him that his eye swelled up once that he gets hives on his face near his eyes, worse then with the dairy. He then said that the flu shot was a no go then. That scared me because if I would have said yes to the shot then what would have happened? Are there any other shots he can't have?

My ds is dairy/peanut/egg allergic. The only one that's ever been brought up is the flu vaccine.
But they drive me nuts about it. In the past the pediatrician told me the nasal mist version was egg free, not the shot. I just emailed them today to verify before I book the appointment and they tell me, nasal spray has never been safe, only the shot is egg free. WHAT? Why have you given him the nasal mist for the past few years then?????
Think we're skipping it, I just don't trust that either is safe.

Odd..
Egg / Flu shot is a VERY common thing. Don't know why they'd even ASK you about the flu shot. Its a given its a no, due to the allergy.
(on a side note, i hate any one pushing me to give AJ a flu shot or myself, I always brace myself to say no, but they don't really push me past asking that first time)

ds #1 is allergic to eggs very badly so I would never give him the flu shot. Better safe than sorry.

DS has an egg allergy but I didn't find out about it until he was already getting the flu shot (he was diagnosed with the allergy at 3.5 years old). He was always ok with both the flu mist and the shot.
DD I had known about her allergy since she was 6 months old. Hers is severe according to her tests. I avoided giving it to her for 4 years and for some reason I decided to give it. She was fine. She received the shot. I was told her first flu shot had to be in a shot form because they need the booster and they do not make a flu mist booster. I went back and forth with the allergist and the pediatrician and its as fine.
If you do want to go ahead and test for it you can. DD actually had an allergy test for MMR and was ok because that is another vaccine that deals with eggs and he tested negative and the allergist administered the shot.

We luckily do not have an egg allergy but I have spoken to two mother's whose children do. They do the flu shot at their allergists office in a controlled environment. Do you have an allergist? Maybe you could talk to them about the shots and see what they say.

I thought there was some form of dairy in the DTaP, but I'm not 100% sure. One of my friend's daughters is on a gluten and dairy-free diet b/c of allergies and mentioned that that's why her DD had a terrible reaction to the DTaP.

This is what we do with ds although I am hoping they just give it to him this season, they split it in 2 doses but first do a sub-dermal "test" with waiting a half hour after each -it's a lot to go through but worth it if you are worried about a serious reaction. I wanted ds to have the vaccine because he has asthma.
