Hyperactivity

Is anyone's child super hyperactive? I am at my witts end with my 4 year old ds. He is really hyper a lot of the time and very difficult to handle. He seems like he is getting worse especially when other people are around. He is so impulsive and mean too. I just don't know how to handle him anymore. He makes me feel so tense. Any suggestions for dealing?? I feel like I have tried everything.

Re: Hyperactivity

I teach kindergarten (children with special needs)- is he hyperactive that he has a lot of energy or do you mean he misbehaves? I'm not sure what your structure is like at home but I would suggest structure (a schedule- so he knows what's coming next) and clear limits/boundaries. Example, he should know what the rules are and what will happen if he chooses to break them. On the same note it's important to praise him when he does the "right" thing. Also, if he has a lot of energy, it's important for him to have an outlet for that.... Lots of outside playtime, things to keep him busy indoors (not tv persay, blocks, Legos, imaginative play)

Most importantly, be consistent. If you (or DH) says no, it's no. Even if he cries, tantrums, as long as its on your terms it's progress :)

Good luck!

This may sound crazy but what does his diet consist of? I have this issue with my DD after she eats certain foods. She becomes very hyper and difficult to handle. Believe it or not even cheese-it's make her hyper. I now try to only give her foods that don't cause this reaction. I read an article a while back about a red dye added to foods that can cause this. I believe it was red dye 40 or something like that.

I could have wrote this same post a year plus ago about my DS. And while we still have our moments with him it is soooo much better. First in my opionion it is important to see if there is anything triggering his hyperactivity/meanness. (for my son he become more "crazed" after be consumed artificially colored food especially red dye, we cut out artificial color and actually started the feingold diet and it made a huge difference especially the out-of-control moments.) whatever the trigger is (if one exist) try to eliminate/limit . Next and just as important into set rules (had my son tell me rules and we wrote them down). We established reward/consequences for his behavior. So he could earn privileges (like playing video game). This allowed us to help him realize what was inappropriate, etc.
Last but probably the hardest is be consisitant, and follow through with consequences.
While we have gotten most of the hyperactivity and misbehaving (not listening) under control we are still working on talking nice to people, especially his parents, but am so happy with where we are compared to almost 2 years ago.

Sorry so long, but hope is helpful. It is easy to put head in sand and blame solely on age/immaturity but I think staying on top of it will only benefit the parent and child in long run.
