NCAA slams Penn State

(07/23/12) INDIANAPOLIS (AP) - The NCAA has slammed Penn State with an unprecedented series of penalties, including a $60 million fine and the loss of all coach Joe Paterno's victories from 1998-2011, in the wake of the Jerry Sandusky child sex abuse scandal.
Other sanctions include a four-year ban on bowl games, and the loss of 20 scholarships per year over four years.
NCAA President Mark Emmert announced the staggering sanctions Monday at a news conference in Indianapolis. Though the NCAA stopped short of imposing the "death penalty" - shutting down the Nittany Lions' program completely - the punishment is still crippling for a team that is trying to start over with a new coach and a new outlook.
Sandusky, a former Penn State defensive coordinator, was found guilty in June of sexually abusing young boys, sometimes on campus.

Although I know someone who played with them from '04-'08, and I'm sure they're experiencing crazy emotions right now (they're on the patriots now)

im going to be honsest i dont follow football and i didnt follow this whole case that closely.
What does it mean that the loss of the vicotries.
Why are they punshing the whole football program? was everyone involved. Did everyone actually know what was going and really kept quite who was it only a few people.
I dont think it would be fair for players to be punsihed (if that is whats happening) when it had nothing to do with them. again though this is based on not having all the facts.

Usually the NCAA doesn't get involved in such horrible cases. They usually deal with things like paying players, players getting free stuff, etc. but even when they give penalties for stuff like that it always affects the entire team because the schools leadership is supposed to prevent things like that from happening.
While it does suck that the players won't be able to play in bowl and championship games, they will still be able to play their regular seasons. Those that are god enough to make it to the nfl will still stand out and make it, and those that aren't, well they weren't gonna make it anyway haha.

I think it is the right decision and I am glad that Penn State has already said it is not going to appeal it. I feel that the victims still can fight Penn State in Civil Court for damages, but that this punishes the school itself rather than current or former players. They could have invoked the death penalty (i.e. shutting down the team) but upon reflection that would really just hurt the current players. This to me hurts the school in their pocketbook. They will have to change the culture and I hope that this helps the community (school, college football fans, child abuse victims, the town, and any other people who were hurt) figure out how to handle the aftermath and will also act as a deterrent to other schools thinking it is ok to get away with horrible things as well. I feel so badly for the victims. I truly hope that they are able to find solace in the fact that everyone realizes how egregious the sins committed by Sandusky and the administration are.

If they were good enough for PSU then I am sure they were recruited by other teams. I think they will loose talent and that is part of the objective of the penalty. They will have a tough time recruiting without the scholarships and the bowl games. The bowl games are money makers for the school. If a particular student athlete does well I am sure he will be noticed by the NFL. This really hits PSU in the pocketbook and that was what the school cared about the most - sadly.

I love this. It is too little, too late, of course, but it's a severe punishment for a severe lack of judgment on the part of multiple people. I'm especially impressed with the loss of scholarships.

I completely agree with this, word for word.
They're ultimately shutting down the program. Without the bowl/championship games, they will lose their players. I bet we see a mass exodus from PSU and the football team dwindles down to nada.
As for thinking it's too little, too late, I disagree. Sandusky was innocent until proven guilty. The NCAA couldn't really react until a verdict came in. Now that they had it, they acted.

Correct me if I am wrong, current players can't just transfer. There are rules for Division 1 players. If they transfer they have to sit out a year. It can hurt them being drafted.

^ intellectually I agree that NCAA couldn't do anything until proven guilty. It's the irrational and angry part of me that wants immediate punishment and condemning, if that makes sense.

Emmert said current players will be allowed to transfer to other schools without having to sit out a year, as is normally required, or they can stay and keep their grants, even if they don't play football.
I think they did the right thing. People need to realize that children's welfare is more important than sports.....

i attended penn state and am saddened by everything that has happened. I am not in disagreement that a few individuals knew more than they let on and tried to sweep things under the carpet. I also don't disagree that a punishment is deserved, but I think this punishment is extremely harsh. You are punishing thousands of students, atheletes and staff members who were not involved. Those who were involved aren't affected by this punishment at all.
I also have a huge problem with everyone taking this Freeh report as the end all be all. The report is hugely biased and subjective. He fails to interview any of the key players and has extremely weak evidence (i.e. the emails). If people actually read the report and not just go by the summary that the media is reporting on, they would see there are major flaws. Again, I am not seeing these key players were innocent. I am just saying that this report shouldn't be taken as fact.

I completely agree.
And the people who did nothing but screwed from this should be upset with the disgusting pigs that did this, not the NCAA. When college b-ball players get caught accepting gifts usually part of the punishment is taking away victories for the period of time it occurred.
I don't feel badly for the people at the school, I feel horribly for THOSE LITTLE BOYS!

Hurting those who weren't involved??? Well then they should be mad at these coaches who screwed them over.
Those boys' lives are screwed up now forever...how about them hurting?
The college I went to had their football program cut and players with scholarships transferred...they will be fine, they'll move on with their lives.
This kind of climate (worrying more about sports) is EXACTLY why this crap got covered up in the first place. What about looking out for innocent CHILDREN over a football game?

Basically football at Penn State is so big that it's a football program with a school attached to it, rather than the other way around. The football became so big at the school that it basically ran the school. Penn State would rather pay the penalties than be prohibited from playing football in the NCAA’s. But realistically speaking, with the NCAA penalties, it's going to be difficult if not impossible to run a winning program if they can't lure prospective athletes to the school.

I don't think they can do enough to punish this school. $60M is nothing to a school with a $1.7B endowment. They deserved for their football program to be broken, and that's what they got. I feel bad for the students involved, and it was NOT their fault, but the whole thing is so tainted anyway. They're allowed to immediately transfer and i am SURE other schools will snatch them up.

sadly, i have no sympathy for him... I keep thinking of those poor kids.

Good. It should have been "the death penalty" but this will do. I'm glad the statue is gone too. These scumbags let this continue for YEARS for the love of the game. They let these kids take one for the team (pun intended) for way to long. This man Is a waste of air. I hope he gets shanked in the slammer.
