Is a baby shower usually kid-friendly?

I have quite a few friends/family members with, babies and toddlers (actually a 12-year-old, an 8-year-old and few 5 year-olds come to mind too—so a handful of older kids as well) and I was under the impression that showers usually include kids (unlike weddings). My sister thinks a no kids policy is the better way to go because too many kids will turn the shower into mass chaos. I understand this, but I feel sad about a certain few kids that won't be there. However, I can't invite some with kids and not others. So maybe a no-kid policy is the way to go...

But will guests who are moms be surprised/upset that they are not invited with their kids? Or is this the norm?

Is a baby shower usually kid-friendly?

If I had a bunch of kids in the family I probably would of left it kid free but, I only have 1 niece who is 5. I didnt invite my nephews and I'm pretty sure, at 7 & 9, they would have had NO desire to be there either.
I had a bib decorating station so that kept my niece happy, she made about 5 bibs :0), and she helped me unwrap my gifts which was super cute. I also had a candy table so she had fun making candy bags for herself & her brothers. My favors were pashminas but I got my niece her own special favor. I went to Michaels and just grabbed a bunch of the crafty things from the $1 aisle. So she has that stuff to do at the table when she was done eating.

When my MIL saw that I invited my niece, she HAD to invite her cousin's 14 yr old daughter. She is a sweet girl but I honestly think she would of been bored. It ended up that she was away at camp anyway. So IMPO, if your going to invite one, you should invite all. If you decided to have them, I would think about little things that would keep them occupied and happy.

I normally don't see kids at a shower. The only time I saw kids was at my cousins bridal shower but it was at someone's house, and the kids who were there were in the wedding. I do not think people will feel offended...

I think little girls should be welcome at showers. Ideally, the mother uses her discretion on whether or not it'd be good for the child!

I have never had a baby shower invite say no kids, and to be honest I would not attend if it did. I have 2 dc and I would not bring them with me because they are 2.5 and 8 months. I just don't think my 2.5 dd could handle it. She would love it, but not be able to handle it. I think it should be at the parents discretion. I can understand a wedding invite or a bridal show invite saying it, but not a baby invite. To me, and this is a poor analogy but hear me out, it's like saying on a housewarning invite come help us celebrate but only if you still rent. We don't want anybody that already own a house here KWIM.

Just for clarity, I would never allow "no-kids" to be put on the invite. The envelope would just be addressed in mom's name only.

Re: Is a baby shower usually kid-friendly?

I wasn't able to secure babysitting last Sat for a baby shower for a close friend of ours (jesse's wife from our BP) and so had to cancel last minute. I feel so bad about not going even though I'm sure she sort of understands....

Anyway the point is, if you dont invite little girls you could lose the parents and sometimes people just bring their kids anyway, whether its explicit on the outside envelope or not.

I think it also depends on the venue - I cant imagine bringing my 2 year old to a four hour long event at a restaurant, but at her grandmas house it would be totally different.

ETA if it was at grandmas house I'd still rather not bring any kids to a shower :)

We didn't invite kids. A lot of my friends have kids (girls) but they never brought them to other showers in our group. They prefer to have the day to themselves. I think it depends on what that particular group normally does. I've been to them where there were kids and some where just immediate nieces are there.

this! and honestly i feel like most women there feel the same, they want the day to themselves.....my kids are well behaved but they are kids so if they are with other kids that are not so well behaved it's constantly me reprimanding my kids to make sure mine aren't interfering with anyone's good relaxing time...in my opinion showers are really a woman's event to do just that relax and enjoy and sometimes that's near impossible when there's 50 kids running around

It wasn't until I started posting on this board that I found out some people don't bring baby and young girls to baby showers. In my social circle and family it's totally the norm. My shower invites were actually addressed to the mom and babies under 2 plus the girl kids. I guess we don't normally invite older boy children, but if someone wanted to bring them it wouldn't be that big of a deal. I think it totally depends on your family and friends.

we had two younger kids and babies at my bridal shower and an 8 year old at my baby shower. we dont have a ton of older kids in our group (mostly 3yo and under) and generally they aren't "invited" persay, but if the parents has to bring them its no big deal. i loved having the kids at the shower, but my aunt (who helped plan the shower) was really annoyed when they started opening some of the gifts. i didnt really care though i thought it was cute. but i def can see it getting chaotic if there are too many kids.

First off your not going to lose the women with children if you dont invite them. Thats ridiculous. And its also ridiculous to think someone woukd put on an invitation no children. I have been to plenty baby showers and had my own where the only children Ive seen are the lil girls in the mother to be's family. Now I had 2 close friends who had baby sitter issues and i told them to bring their kids because i wanted my friends there and i didnt mind.

Bottom line, its YOUR party do what YOU want. If your friends who are moms want to be there they will be there no excuses. Im sorry just because someone has kids doesnt mean they get invited to every party. And i have never seen lil boys at a bahy shower ever.

This is my situation exactly
ETA I had 3 girls, 1 little boy at my bridal, and 3 little girls at my baby shower

I didn't really mind but I did find this odd. We only invited adults to the shower but we didn't specify it was kid free or anything. Come the day of the shower 2 people (who don't even know each other, so it's not like they decided together that this would be ok) showed up with their daughters (who were in the 6-9 age range). Again I didn't mind the girls being there AT ALL but I was surprised by it.

I would also think that if kids were invited the kids name would be on the envelope. I think most people go by what is on the envelope so that sets the tone.

I wanted to clarify what I wrote above. I don't think EVERY guest who has a little girl should be invited with their child. But close ones - nieces, cousins, and maybe close friends - should be included.
