I can't stop

When is a child out of "danger"?

I keep going on the SIDS websites and reading about all the babies that have died and it breaks my heart

I can't stop obsessing about it

It is a very scary thing. It can happen up to a year but the chances lessen every month they get older, especially when they can roll over by themselves. Stop looking at that stuff you will drive yourself crazy

I'm with ya dear!
The only position that we can get Hannah comfortable is on belly ( a no-no) and her side which we have been doing (there is still risk) I don't sleep one wink from the time I take over in the middle of the night until I go to work. I have to keep my eye on her especially the way she refluxes, I am afraid she will .......anyway......

They tell you that the risk decreases alot after 4 mos. I'm with you though. I keep the video monitor blasting so I can hear her breathe.

My DH was very concerned about SIDS. He insisted we get the Angelcare monitor, which does alleviate some of the anxiety. When Jesse was sleeping in the swing, he'd actually stop the swing to check to see if Jesse was still breathing. It can drive you crazy if you let it. Try not to stress about it - put your baby to sleep on their back and check them when you can. As each month passes, the chances anything will happen lessen.

My baby is not even here yet but it is something I worry about more than almost anything so far. My mom's best friend lost a child to SIDS and knowing someone who lost a baby that way makes it seem more real to me and not just something I read about.

I got an angelcare monitior- it made things so much easier for me...

I got the angelcare monitor as well, makes me able to sleep much better... and I still use it at 10 1/2 months old!!

I used to be obsessed to- at 6 months the risk goes down alot and esp as they get stronger with there necks, I used to check his breathing all the time at night. I was nuts, but it passed and now at 14 months there are new things to worry about-

DS has great neck control. He hates sleeping on his back, so I talked to the ped. She said I could put him on his stomach, but I'd probably lose my mind not sleeping. She said once he can roll over, I can leave him.

BUT.............we couldn't deal with the swaddling and the incline. He'd get too hot. So, he's been sleeping on his stomach for about 2 weeks now (he's 11 weeks). He's doing great!

as long as your baby can lift it's head from side to side....or can roll over themselves they are pretty safe.

I was more paranoid about hte overheating being a risk factor than the smothering since DD was lifting her head pretty early on

I was worried about it too so I bought the Angel Care Monitor which monitors sound but also breathing. If there is no movement from the baby (beathing) for 20 secs, the alarm goes off.

Let me find a link for it...mine was on my BRU registry but they have it for less at Target.

I LOVE it. It gives me such peace of mind.

the only thing i can stress to you is DO NOT SMOKE! this increases the chance of sids so much!!!!

is it just the smoke or the smell of the smoke that they are concerned about with sids? etd to add: dh smokes and so does 1/2 of the grandparents. i get so paranoid when they go out to smoke a cigarette and then want to hold the baby.

Get the Angelcare monitor. It is awesome. Set it to "tick". It gives me such peace of mind!

BTW- I JUST stopped using that thing and my DS is almost 15 months old!!!
