More Seasonal Allergy Questions

Right now I give DS Claritin in the morning and Benadryl in the evening. He was itchy at daycare all day yesterday and then up all night with me - itching his eyes, his head and his back (which now has a huge yucky looking rash!). I feel like I can't send him to daycare until the pollen count is less - they are changing his clothes after they go outside and wiping him down - but by the evening he's a disaster! I'm sure this all because I'm exhausted but I'm so confused about what else to do. The pediatrician isn't much help - she keeps saying just limit his time outside and this will pass (sure, she's right, but I may not survive!). Has anyone had any luck with different medications? I'm actually considering taking a leave of absence from work until his allergies pass (crazy, right??). Should we see an allergist (Ped thought I should wait until his symptoms are better managed)?? Any help would be appreciated - I'm losing it!

(I'm new to LI Families - sorry for all the allergy posts Chat Icon )

I can't find Zyrtec! Where do you buy it? I bought Allegra, but I want to give it to him when I'm with him, just in case he has a strange reaction - so I'm hoping tomorrow or Saturday.

Re: More Seasonal Allergy Questions

my ped allergist said claritin is the WEAKEST of them all..

we give zyrtec but we use costco's kirkland brand (aller-tec) and it is like a 1/3 of the price and it seems to be working...you can give full amt in the morning every 24 hrs or half a dose in am and other half dose 12 hrs later

we use the full dose in the am and it seems to work better than when we were doing half and half

Re: More Seasonal Allergy Questions

Thank you for the feedback – I think I’ll pick up zyrtec and give it a try tomorrow; I’ll have the Allegra for back up. Meanwhile his daycare just called about his rash, my poor baby!

Re: More Seasonal Allergy Questions

Also...try bathing in morning and night.get all the allergens off.and get allergy protective sheets for pillow and mattress and wash them often..like ever day or every other if necessary...

Also do you use fabric softener or dryer sheets..we cannot use them in our house..or anything with perfume..we use free all and clear detergent and hand soap..

My DH got (cheap) hand soap at Walgreens - I didn't realize it was scented and my dd broke out in THE MOST horrible rash all over her hands...we threw it away and with the help of her prescription cream it was gone in a day or two

Re: More Seasonal Allergy Questions

DS #1 has TERRIBLE seasonal allergies.
My advice is take your little guy to see the allergist. Our allergist has prescribed ZYRTEC (Claritin didn't help much) Patanol drops for his eyes 3 times a day and a nose spray (nasonex) And after ALL of this daily regimen it is still bad. Now on top of it all he's on singulair which was the only thing that truly helped him last year. It's only been 3 days but I am starting to see a difference. So if your ped is dilly dallying around this issue, you should find another doctor to help you. I know a lot of times people trust their doctors but they are humans too and sometime they can be wrong!

Re: More Seasonal Allergy Questions

Well let me ask because I haven't used claritin in a while - are you using a 24 hour or 12 hour? If you are using a 12 hour and only giving it in the morning BUT then only giving him benadryl at night then he will lose the benefit of the medicines. I notice that DD does much better when she is on allegra for 2 days than the 1st dose or two. But if you only give it once a day (it is every 12 hours) you are losing the benefit of the meds.

So I would drop the benadryl and give the claritin 2xs (if it is 12 hour) or go up to allegra and try that. Zrytec is the best for allergies (per my allergist) but many kids are bothered by it (it made my DD loopy and moody) but she does fine with allegra which is stronger than claritin but not quite as strong as zrytec.

Thank you! I just read this and you're are sooo right! Last night I decided to give him Allegra (they didn't have Zyrtec at Kmart or Duane Reade, urgh!). He was really itchy and for the first hour after I gave the Allegra I figured I messed up because the benadryl really helps the itch, but he actually had a good nights sleep last night. I gave him another 12-hour dose of Allegra this morning. He's itchy, but better. Thank you!!

Where do you get it?

Has anyone tried local bee honey? I've read that can help too.

I buy it at my son's allergist. I think Amazon might have it.

Thank you - I'll google it, I'm willing to try anything and something natural would be ideal!
