Contractions - False Labor?

Sometimes I get contractions here and there that feel like the start of labor but then they abruptly stop. I notice them most in the car while driving home from work and then they stop when I get home.

Today I started getting contractions about 20 minutes apart after lunch. Then on the drive home they were 10 minutes apart, then 7, then 5 and they were pretty strong. I was convinced this was it. Once I was home, they stopped altogether! What the heck!

This is false labor right? Has anyone else had this? Any idea if this is a sign that the real deal is coming soon? So frustrating Chat Icon

Could just be your body getting ready for the real deal, but I would ask the doctor just to be safe.

Yes they were pretty painful. Felt like really bad AF cramps. But once I change positions (like getting out of the car) they stop completely.

False labor usually also ceases with rest, which it sounds like for you. (I'm a first timer so I don't know from experience, just from my nursing textbooks!) Real labor doesn't subside with rest or position change. Since yours were increasing in frequency and strength it sounds like you might go soon though!

Thank you! Guess it's time to stop commuting. It's scary when it happens in the car

Re: Contractions - False Labor?

I had one all-day episode of false labor with my first. then they slowed down, then they stopped--just in time for thanksgiving dinner--I had been debating whether i should eat or not :) i went into real labor 3 days later.

with my second, i had lots of smaller episodes of false labor, for up to an hour or so. often while i was in the car. they happened for the last few weeks...
