NSUH question about baby rooming with mom...

I went for the tour the other day just to check out the new wing (which is beautiful!), and we had a nurse talk about the babies rooming with the moms.

She seemed to really be pushing it, but saying of course they are there in the nursery IF you've had a rough day and really need to rest and want to send the baby there.

This will be my 3rd baby and CSEction in just over three years, the last two were at Huntington hospital, where the staff was AMAZING.

The nurses at Huntington almost made me give the baby back at night, saying I needed to rest, let them take care of the baby, and that I'd be doing it all at home... NEver made me feel bad about sending the baby back at night.

Now knowing I will have sooo much To do at home I could really use the rest right after the CSection. I know they can't make you keep the baby overnight, but this nurse seemed to say that was the norm.

Anyone hear or have experience with this at nsuh?

I don't know about NSUH, but I just wanted to tell you that they are pushing rooming in everywhere. I deliver at HH and they were def pushing it there now. The didn't when I had my DS 2.5 yrs ago. I did however send DD to the nursery for most of the nights (though I still requested she be brought to me for nursing in the MOTN).

All the hospitals are now pushing for you to keep the baby at all time. They will take the baby to the nursery but bring them back if the baby wants to feed or is fussy.

I had my 3rd c section there in August. Like you, I wanted rest at night. I had no problems sending the baby to the nursery at night. I needed my rest and the nurses understood. Most do keep the baby with them overnight, but it is not mandatory.

Wow, interesting that they are all Pushing this. I'm surprised about Huntington, especially because both times I was there their were not that mahad babies.

Lol, my grandmother said that when she had her babies she was in the hospital for an entire week, separated from the baby the whole time... Now we are expected to be up, caring for a newborn hours after major surgery, while heavily medicated, then sent home already sleep deprived! One extreme to the other.

If I'm tired, I'm definitely not going to be made to feel bad about sending him to the nursery. I always took my babies for at least one night feeding anyway.

Re: NSUH question about baby rooming with mom...

i delivered there in june and they really pushed the rooming in thing. i had my baby at 9:39 pm and didnt even get out of the labor room and into a recovery room til 4 am so the baby was in the nursery and brought to me around 5 am. needless to say i did not get any sleep that night, was on percoset and in tremendous pain from a third degree tear. the second night at midnight i was so so so so so tired and needed to sleep desperately so i asked the nurse about taking the baby to the nursery and she gave me a really hard time about it. i had to level with her and tell her i just NEEDED to sleep, and she did take the baby but brought her back to me at 5 am. i am not sure why this "rooming in" thing is being forced upon us, but it is definitely not fair to make a new mother feel guilty for wanting to get even a few hours of rest after labor and before going home to many more sleepless nights.

I delivered at NSUH at the end of June and we were in the new rooms.

I delivered at 6:30pm and spent the first night an overflow L&D room, and by the time they brought DD to the nursery and did everything they do there, I think we got her back to us sometime late night/early morning. The next night they kind of pushed keeping the baby with us.

Specifically, I was bf and wanted the baby to go to the nursery for a few hours so we could sleep, but when she was hungry I didn't want them to give her a bottle, I wanted them to call me or bring her to me. The nurse said that they wouldn't do that and if the baby was crying they would just give her a bottle. We wound up keeping her with us for the night.

But that was the only 'issue' I had the whole time we were there. Everyone else was really helpful and nice.

Oh wow! I would not be happy. How are you supposed to heal? I would imagine too that many moms would possibly sleep through the crying or feeding times just from being so exhausted, and medicated.

I wonder if it's a hospital thing or if it's the nurses taking it upon themselves to guilt the moms into it ... Lol.

My mom is a nurse and worked l&d and PP for years and would work nights in the nursery sometimes with 30 babies, so I could see how it could be crazy, and I didn't mind when they started making it a real "option" to room, but to make women who are physically and mentally exhausted from giving birth, especially trying to recover from major surgery is not cool.

I delivered in November and they did not push it at all. The first day/night DD was in the NICU anyway so I didn't have her, but for the 2nd night they asked me what I wanted to do and I let them keep her in the nursery for that night too...when I went to pick her up from the nursery in the morning there were a ton of other babies in the nursery getting ready to be brought to the mommies.

I just delivered my twins there via c section in feb.

I was not forced to keep the babies at all. I never was made to feel bad about sending them.

I had the opposite I wanted to keep them with dh and myself and the nurse told me to send them and get some rest.

I loved my stay there the hospital and staff were amazing
