TAXES: writing off children's classes

A friend told me that her accountant writes off all the activities she pays for for her kids. She said that Gymboree, any Mommy and Me that you pay for, or swimming etc. are all refundable.

But she had no details of how to go about it. Has anyone done this? Do you need Tax ID #'s??? How does it work if you do your own taxes?

Not sure, but our acct said swimming isnt deductible. He said you have to leave the child for a certain period of time like in a daycare setting.

He mentioned it being a red flag and we would be more likely to get audited...just an FYI

I could be wrong but I thought preschool and some classes were but ONLY if both parents work because it would be considered day care. I don't think you can normally write off classes.

If she has no details of how she did it, I highly doubt she did - as you need tax ID#'s, legal names, addresses, etc. It's not something you can just make up.

Technically speaking, no - those types of activities are generally not deductible, as your child has to be enrolled in them so mommy and daddy can either work, go back to school, be job hunting, or be disabled.

You would be hard pressed to prove to the IRS that your child needs to be in Mommy & Me so you can work or go on an interview, etc.

She didn't make it up. She did mention Tax ID#'s.....but she wasn't sure of all the details. Maybe she had a different circumstance- I figured it would be too good to be true for me! Thanks everyone for your advice! Glad I asked first before pursuing!

Re: TAXES: writing off children's classes

def need Tax ID or SS'# to claim day/childcare.
If the swimming or any physical activities were for therapy reasons I believe you can claim that.
