Breast pump problems
I'd love to breastfeed and going back to work at 12 weeks, I know a breast pump is something I'll need. We didn't get one from our shower and they are SOOO expensive. That being said, a family member said I could have hers since she didn't use it much. I'd obviously get some new parts (whatever they may be) but I thought that was normal.
Then I tell my doctor and she's like "Oh, no, you can't share breast pumps" I said well the ones they rent in the hospital.. isn't that the same thing???" I couldn't figure out her reasoning behind it, but am wondering what everyone's heard???

The Symphony (hospital pump) is designed to have multiple users. It has a "closed circuit" system so milk or condensation never has a chance to get into the motor. The pump is built to last. Not so with the typical pumps sold in BRU/BBB. They have a 5-year lifespan, at best. (If you're friend's pump is a few years old, it might be less powerful than a new one). Even if you don't see it, milk, water, and air particles get into the pump.
Why not rent one while you figure out if BFing is going to work for you? Once you've got that established, investing in a new pump makes more sense. Check with your insurance or Edgepark to see if it's covered. You can write the cost off on your taxes as a medical expense also.

It is recommended by all the companies not to share breast pump for health reasons. That being said, I know countless women, myself included, who use hand-me-down pumps. It seems like such a small chance that anything could come of it, the way the parts are arranged. You have to do what you are comfortable with.
Like PP said, many insurance companies will cover part or all of the cost of a breast pump- that's definitely worth looking into.

I agree with the PP. it's probably a liability thing. also, actual breast pump companies will also obviously tell you not to share bc they want your money.
as long as it's a closed circuit system, u should be fine. I am borrowing my sister's pump & I'm just getting new accessories (basically anything that touched her boob and/or milk). sooo many people do it. I'm sure it's fine.

I know so many people borrow pumps from others and just change all the accessories but everything I have read says not to. I personally wouldn't borrow one but I am skeeved by things like that.

I was very ocd about cleaning everything when pumping, and I can tell you that the milk does not go anywhere near the motor. It's not physically possible. As far as moisture from the air, that's a possibility, I really don't know. But now that I've BTDT, I would totally borrow someone else's motor, and again, I'm pretty grossed out by this kind of stuff! I bought my Medela pump at BBB with a 20% coupon. Good luck!

I totally understand it is expensive but I am hearing it is sooooo worth every penny. I am hearing great things about the Medela Freestyle

I borrowed my SILs. There is no way the milk gets anywhere near the motor. Everything else I replaced.
