Re: The Pines in Medford

My brother lives in this area. We always go trick or treating at his house because it is such a nice area to go to. All of the people seem very nice and friendly. He has tons of stores and places super close by, easy access to the LIE and Sunrise HWY, I think it is a great area to live in.

Re: The Pines in Medford

My sister lives there. I grew up in Eagle Estates. I dont want to hurt anyones feelings with my honest opinions, but growing up as a kid and even now it seems the pines are a better place to live.

I would consider it if it wasnt Pat Med schools (where I went K-12 by the way). Im just not impressed with the way the district has been going. I subbed there after college, my son went to Kindergarten there too.

If I had to choose though Id go the pines. Some streets are nice and quiet :) I do notice a lot of speeders too b/c a lot of blocks have stop signs far apart.

Re: The Pines in Medford

let me preface this by saying I do not intend to hurt anyones feelings or offend anyone...therefore IMO if you have children I would stay away from the Medford area. Most of the known "bad" areas do have decent or even nice areas within them but it all comes down to SD because even if you live in the upscale part, your children still have to go to school with the kids who dont and if its a known high crime area (which patchogue and medford are) what kind of impact will that type of living environment have on your LO's?

IDK if it's a cost factor or not but I would try to lean more towards holtsville or Farmingville or even Holbrook (all Sachem SD). All of those areas are in the direct vicinity of Medford but much nicer and they all have a range of home prices...many of them are highly affordable these days.

We just bought a house in Holtsville, in Summerfield Estates. We are movin in this week. I LOVE it there, so peaceful and safe for the kids and in a development of 400 homes and over 1000 kids, everyone knows everyone. We couldnt have asked for better.

You should also keep in mind that an area like Medford will not have as good a resale value as some of the surrounding areas will.

GOOD LUCK!!!!

I am a product of Pat-Med Schools and now live in Medford and have a 3-year old daughter. Although its not the greatest area to live in its by far not the worst either. If it were, I wouldn't be here. I still keep in touch with my old elem school teachers who raised kids in Pat-Med and they said like ANYWHERE, you have your good and not so good areas/children. They were more then satisfied with the elem schools in Medford and even told me their kids did FINE in the JHS and HS as well. What it comes down to is your PARENTING SKILLS 100%!

I'm not quite sure how you can say FARMINGVILLE is better. I totally disagree. As for Holbrook and Holtsville, maybe a DROP better.

PS. I like your community very much, its very nice. Good luck there:)

I'm not sure where you are getting your information from, but Medford is NOT considered a high crime area. It may not be as nice as some other areas, but it isn't HIGH crime.

Ive lived in medford for almost 3 years now and I had more issues living in selden & ronkonkoma then here. The town gets a bad rap from the past but its changing and I’m glad to be part of it! Yes the sd is a bit hardier then others but honestly the grass is always greener on the other side, I am a firm believer if you and your children have a good relationship and you are very involved in their lives then they will turn out the way they’re supposed to no matter the district. I have 5 cousins that all went to pat-med two are now making triple digit salaries and the other 3 are just like anyone else you meet normal blue collar long islanders, they all have college degrees but one (not that that should matter).
So yes resale as of now may be hardier but I’m happy here and i know my kid is to!

Re: The Pines in Medford

I grew up in the Pines area, DH grew up in Eagle Estates.

I would pick the pines over Eagle Estates. Like a pp said, any area is going to have its good and bad. Pat-Med certainly isn't the same it was 10+ years ago, but I still think it is a great school. We looked in the area for a house bc I would have no problem sending them there.

Re: The Pines in Medford

like i said...i did not intend to offend anyone so the snippy-ness is uncalled for. Don't take it so personally, No where in my statement did I knock you or any of the other residents of Medford BUT I did say that it is a higher crime area because statistically IT IS... I am not speaking from experience, although I did live in Shirley briefly when married to my ex husband, which also has a horrible reputation when compared to other long island towns. We had just had my oldest DS but my ex was born and raised there and his family still lived there so that is where we ended up. He to was a good "product" of that SD as were his 6 brothers and sisters...However I would NEVER have sent my kids to those public schools and just because he turned out ok doesnt make a stitch of a difference to me. EVERY town and subsequent SD, both good and bad, have produced high calibur students as well as low ones. All I am saying is that speaking from an investment and statistical stand point, it would not be MY choice.

Additionally, times have changed dramatically since you and I went to school and I am only 31yo so it was not that long ago. Elementary school is mostly docile anywhere you go, its Middle and High school you need to consider as a parent and I hate to burst your bubble but at the impressionable teenage years it doesn't matter how close you think you will be to your kids...their friends will be closer.

If you like that area... great, to each their own. I was simply stating my opinion from what I know of it through people who live there or have at one point and through family members that have worked in the middle schools.

Not sure why it is a "drop" better than Farmingville though. Are you familiar with these 3 areas? I am as I have lived here my entire life. Both towns are not just a "drop" better than Farmingville and that is one town that I would not live in.

Hazel- I don't think there is anything wrong with Holbrook. In fact, I reckon most would agree that they don't find anything wrong with Holbrook.

I think everyone just has their own preferences, for their own reasons.

The other poster said she just bought a house in Holtsville and I know I'd never live there - even after I looked at homes in that area. I didn't like it, but that doesn't mean that my feelings on Holtsville are worth gold. Just wasn't for me.

Everyone is different.

If you're happy in your town, and so is your family, that's all that matters.

Re: The Pines in Medford

We are looking into the Medford Patchogue area because it's affordable for us and still relatively close to our family. We don't hate the SD either. I'm so sick of people spouting off at the mouth about the Pat-Med SD and turning up their nose when we mention we are interested in buying there. Of course Pat-Med falls to the bottom of the list when the schools surrounding it (Connetquot, Sachem and Sayville) are all outstanding districts. And IMO, these days, you are either sending your kid to a school with "poor" wrong-side-of-the-track kids, and future criminals OR "rich" drug dealers/addicts.

As for the area, it's a beautiful neighborhood that can be mistaken for any neightborhood in Suffolk County. IMO, Medford is a great town with a few bad areas, just like Farmingville and Holtsville.

Thank you for everyone's input. We have a LOT to think about.

Totally agree what you said here.

I grew up in a upper middle class/rich area on the North Shore and the kids weren't just smoking some pot or dealing pot, but heroin and cocaine.

Hypodermic needles to this day are found in the lovely park for children right in the town.

I can't tell you how many people I graduated with from my "award winning high school" that either:

a) went to rehab
b) died of a drug overdose
c) are in jail for dealing/using

but, like usual, money hides problems...but it doesn't hide the names in the newspaper.

and people still spout off about this being the best town to live in. I'll never undestand.

Re: The Pines in Medford

As I said in my earlier posts, my opinion was not meant to offend anyone and if it did I apologize but I one thing I will not apologize for is having an opinion. Sadly many people dont know how not to turn a thread into a dramatic soap opera and this is no different. I would hardly call my post "spouting off", clearly I was speaking from a strictly analytical pov, with the statistics, city data, SD and real estate value being what it is. Maybe I am incorrect about Farmingville as it probably changed from what it was years ago.

Also, I dont appreciate the insinuation that I "turned my nose up" at anyone...that is not who I am nor will I ever be. You asked for thoughts and opinions...Thats what I gave and I shouldnt be flamed for it. IMO don't ask the question if you only want the answer you want to hear.

Re: The Pines in Medford

part of the area I cover for work is Medford, I am also in a job that requires travel to these areas at night time. Medford is a fine area, with some really nice quiet parts. The Pines is nice and Eagle Estates is not bad adn has gotten better recenly. I think Medford gets a bad rap b/c part of Gordon Heights is in Medford thus-looking at crime statistics it makes it look like Medford is a higher crime area.
as far as Pat-Med schools, my job also requires a lot of dealings with the schools and we have never had a problem or complaint. Your children are going to meet differnt types of kids no matter what district they are in, it is up to the parents and how they raise them to teach them right from wrong, and to help with their homework and involve them in after-school activities.
Also part of Medford is also in the Longwood District just so you are aware. Not sure where the borders are but I know kids that go to Longwood that live in Pat-Med on my caseload

No, Farmingville has not changed. You were correct.
I do agree all towns have some problems. Some more than others.

Re: The Pines in Medford

I really think you need to take the "statistics" with a grain of salt. As some of the other posters said, money hides a lot. Three Vil lage SD has had lots of incidents but you never hear about them in the news. My kids went to Comsewogue in PJS. Nice school but I've heard you can buy just about any drug you want there. I now live in Patchogue and love it here. Its quiet and I love the village.

No matter what district you are in, your kids can be influenced. They may be your precious dd or ds now but wait until they are teenagers. Friends have a lot more control over them than you, good "area" or not.

Re: The Pines in Medford

Sachem is no better than Pat-med in My Opinion. I went to Sachem and have know many Heroin addicts, Bullies/gangs, Drug Dealers and so on.. actually its really sad how much crap goes on there you dont hear of. Its everywhere!! I live in North Patchogue, and love it. The Schools are not bad. They are really changing and the town has been getting better. Price value will be going up as the area has been really improving. Every area you live in will have good parts and bad. Each district will have good kids and bad. Yes Parenting can make a difference, and friends will be there to influence. But as a parent I plan on raising my children in full awareness of what Drug use really does. I will go great lengths to make sure they realize what it does. Not the crap they teach in DARE. We have an addict in our family and trust me when I say I will go Great Lengths...if I have to bring them to a meeting, Rehab or make them watch Intervention. Show them pictures..even if graphic. They will know the truth about it. I will be on top of them..and they will hate me...haha!! Especially since I know all the signs. But anyway I think the Pines is a nice Area to live. Good Luck where ever you decide to buy. Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon

As pretty as Summerfield is once you get through those gates but you are smack right off of an industrial area(Bluepoint & Ocean are not nice areas at all) and its built on a former garbage landfill. All of of that and high taxes to go to the same schools as other Holtsville residents in much lower income areas. Definitely shows us that no matter what, no area is perfect Chat Icon
