HELP - Multiple Febrile seizures and medication

I don't post much but I really need to hear if anyone has had any experiences with multiple febrile seizures and medication.

To make it short my DD is 2 1/2 and ad 4 seizures in a day back in June. She was checked for everything and all neurological tests were also done and seizures were ruled out as febrile seizures. They sent us home with emergency medicine (Diastat/Diazepam) to use in case she had a very long seizure or multiples in a short time.

Today 6 months later she has had 4 seizures in a day and after multiple conversations with the Dr and finally the neurologist we decided very reluctantly to give her the Diazepam...I say reluctantly because we were fraid of side effects and also hear that this drug is very strong..We just administered the medicine and would love if ANYBODY can tell me if they have had any experiences with this and what effect it caused on your DC .

Thank you SO MUCH in advance, I would really appreciate any experiences, and sorry if any of this sounds like rambling or difficult to understand, I havent slept and I am on aa very high nervous state at the moment..Thanks again,

Viviana

Re: HELP - Multiple Febrile seizures and medication

Only speaking on behalf of my nephews-two have seizures. One supposedly is Febrile but finally at age 8, its not..they are somewhat related to epileptic seizures as well as his brother who is epilleptic. Genectic from mother.

He does take meds....I cant say if he takes diazpehm...but I know he has had the other.
The only effects I have ever seen is major aggressiveness. IDK if it is even a side effect but he appears to be very aggressive on meds.

That is all i have ever/seen witnessed.

Re: HELP - Multiple Febrile seizures and medication

Thank you to both of you for your responses. We gave the baby the seizure medicine the day of my post, it did not work and she had a seizure an hour later. After that, we called the ambulance and she had three more on the way to the hospital. She then had one more seizure at the hospital after the ER Dr had given her a different medicine, so they had to increase the dosage. She was admitted and put on observation with a 24 hour EEG. There were no abnormalities on the EEG but the neurologist thinks its best to put her on a daily dosage of anti seizure medicine, she says since kids get sick more often in the winter, she wants her to be protected since she had to many seizures in one day(about 9). Just hoping this helps her and the medicine doesn't have too many side effects.

Again, if anybody has any personal experiences with this I would appreciate it if you can share anything helpful.

Thanks

Re: HELP - Multiple Febrile seizures and medication

My son gets febrile seizures - the second to last one he seized for about 20 minutes and only came out of it when he was given diazepam . He was 18 months old and that was his 5th or 6th febrile seizure. They kept him in the hospital for 24 hrs to observe him and do the EEG which he also passed. We were supposed to go for a MRI but my husband and I along with his ped decided we did not want him to u dergo anesthesia.

We were given. Diazepam if he were to seize longer than 10 min.... His next febrile seizure I administered the diazepam within minutes. He came out of it and was very groggy. Not sure the dosage you were given but ds was given 10mg.

We were told he will grow out of it . Dh also used to get febrile seizures as a toddler and was put on phenobarbital.. My mil told me it made him bounce off the walls and it was a side effect of the medication. He came off of it a year later and never had another febrile seizure again.

Thank you so much for sharing your experience, My DD diazepam dosage was 7.5 mg and she is older than your son, so I'm thinking that maybe that's why it did not work. It also makes me feel better that your DH had that experience on being on medication for a year and never had another seizure after getting off the medication. She is on dilantin(Phenytoin)not phenobarbital. I know every case is different but hearing other stories that help me make sense to some things helps a lot.
Thanks so much and best wishes for your son too, no matter how much they say these seizures are not harmful, they are terrible to watch and to see a very long one or multiples in one day is very hard.
