do you feel it would be appropriate for your child's teacher to miss five or ten days for family vacations during the year? Why or why not?

I personally feel that there is a bigger obligation. I dont think they should be MIA for a week and not teaching 22 students. I dont equate a teacher to a child but rather a teacher to myself. If I had off the whole summer, I wouldnt take off for weeks at a time at my job. I get 4 weeks, I take 4 weeks.

*Curious-what kind of package does a teacher get in terms of sick time/holidays/vacations?

It varies district by district.

Where I work we get 12 sick days and 2 personal days. If they are unused they carry over to the next year. We are not allowed sick or personal days tacked onto the beginning or end of any school vacation unless we have a doctor's note or some sort of proof of family wedding, graduation or religious observance. (Sometimes these things are hard to "prove" which is frustrating.)

We are not allowed more than 2 sick days in a row without a doctor's note. (Again, this is sometimes a pain. Last year I got a horrible stomach virus on Memorial Day night and was out of school for 3 days. I broke 2 "rules" so I knew I had better haul myself to the walk in clinic to get a note. But really...? What adult goes to the doctor when they know they have a virus?? My DH drove me and kept having to pull over so I could get sick. Chat Icon )

In addition to this we get NO maternity leave. We get 12 weeks FMLA, and the only way we can be paid for this is if we use accumulated sick days. Otherwise it is without pay. After 12 weeks we can no longer be paid, regardless of the sick days we have accumulated and are droppd from our medical insurance unless we want to pay out of pocket.
At that point we also lose our grade and building seniority unless we return to work.

If we choose not to return we can be granted up to 2 additional years off, but that is without pay and benefits and isn't always approved. If it is approved, at the end of 2 years we are placed wherever there is a position in our area of certification and not the grade/school you left.

Obviously we also get most school vacations and holidays off. One exception to this is Election Day. The kids were off but we had to attend workshops and lectures.

Aren't you glad you asked?? LOL There are as many variations to this as there are school districts on LI, but they are all somewhat similar.

Same for us.

In addition we may not use personal days on a Monday or Friday unless we can prove very good reason. Personal days attached to a holiday or vacation are almost always denied (we missed my nieces wedding in Florida because it was over Thanksgiving weekend).

I could never take a week off to take a vacation during the school year. That is a sacrifice that I make as a teacher but it would be nice to do as others do and enjoy shorter lines and less expensive airfare and not die of heat BUT DD is now in 1st grade and I don't believe in pulling out so it wouldn't happen anyway.

Can I ask why there is a bigger obligation for a teacher v a student? Yes, the teacher a to manage 22 students and teach them, but the student has to learn things he/she never has before.

Teachers getting paid. They have an obligation to the school and to their students. Students are not getting paid (and sometimes are paying large amounts of money to attend school) and their obligation is to themselves and their learning. I'm not taking a side on whether it's okay to take a kid out of school, but I don't see how it's not clear that the obligation is different.

Honestly, I would care that much as long as the kids were left with someone capable who was able to continue with the lesson plan.

Teacher is Paid and has too many days off already IMO. Parents are paying for school so , parents choice to remove students.

Unless the child is going to a private school, the parent is not paying for it.

Absolutely not but I don't think it's acceptable for students to miss school for family vacations either.

Of course they are. Where do tax dollars go? But I don't think this gives them the right to pull their children out of school at will.

I don't know of a public school system where a teacher would be able to do this.

yes, you are right...I guess I wasn't thinking, it was a looong day!
Either way, that was a pretty harsh post- both teachers AND students should be in school everyday unless they are sick or there is a family emergency. (referring to the poster who said teachers have way to many days off as it is)

But isn't a child's "job" to be a student? They aren't paid, but that is their "job", to go to school and learn.

I think this is funny though, the TEACHERS have too many days off, but the kids don't? Isn't it equal?Chat Icon

It wouldnt be appropriate or possible. There are many rules to taking sick/personal days. Our vacations are when we are off from school period.

I wouldn't care as long as there was a suitable substitute teaching the same lesson plans the teacher would have used....(in other words, no fluff work or crossword puzzle days

You dont have to ask why there is a bigger obligation for a teacher vs a student because the OP already asked this and I gave MY opinion. Just because you dont like my opinion doesnt mean that there isnt another view on the situation.

Re: Spinoff of taking kids out of school for trips...

How do u know it is for a family vacay? Last year my mom missed 10 school days bc she was sitting Shiva 1 week for my grandma, and another for my uncle. Obviously this is an extenuating circumstance, but schools do not usually allow so much time off. I get 10 days sick and 3 personal but the 3 personal can only be used for very specific reasons.

As long as they have someone who is competent to cover, I'm fine with it.

I recently had an issue with a sub my son had so at this point I would emphasize COMPETENT.
