Re: Holiday hosting tips

do as much ahead of time as you can! you want to be able to enjoy your company and not spend the entire day in the kitchen.

if people as what they can bring, let them bring something! dessert/appetizer

plan out your menu. i also like to pull out the serving dishes that everything will go on and put post its on them so when people come in the kitchen to help its much easier!

Do as much as you can in advance.

Make lists so you don't forget anything.

Make a schedule for the day of so you don't forget anything and so that everything is done on time.

Don't reinvent the wheel and keep things simple.

Everything that she said. I also do the post-it notes as well....something I inherited from my mom. Last but not least, post a list/menu on the frig so you don't forget to put anything out.

ETA: Another awesome idea I got from my MIL - go to the dollar store and get a bunch of those aluminum take out tins with covers....you can pack up leftovers to send with people in those and then you don't have to use your own stuff!

Also make sure you have plenty of tupperware with lids for leftovers.

Make sure you have serving spoons for everything as well as dishes.

Empy your dishwasher that day so you have room for all the dishes.

And keep track of what you made, bought etc and how many people came. Keep it to refer to in the future - so helpful. Would be great if you noted if there were leftovers, not enough of things too but I never do that Chat Icon

Re: Holiday hosting tips

try and set the table the night before

dont leave the cleaning of your house until the day before

pre-desinate a place for people to put thier belongings-pocketbooks/baby items/jackets if you dont have acloset that can fit everything

Re: Holiday hosting tips

i agree with the above posters... and plan as much as you can ahead of time. i'm having Christmas Eve and don't consider myself a good cook so i'm stressing a little bit. i may get a tray or 2 from somewhere (i.e. baked ziti or shells) so i don't stress out and can enjoy.

also, just remember you can't please everyone and don't expect eveything to be perfect. most people are coming to enjoy your company so don't get stressed out hoping everything goes according to plan. hard to coordinate when people are running late and serving dinner. My FMIL was late and we were waiting for him to eat. we called him and he was doing laundryChat Icon so we just went ahead without him. unfortunately, people can be rude and inconsiderate. hope this won't be the case with you Chat Icon
