Disney in December?

If you could go to Disney for Christmas but don't actually want to be there for Christmas, which week would you go?
We have been there the first week of December but not later on in Dec.

12/11 - 12/16
or
12/18 - 12/23

???

The first week up there leaves more time before Christmas, etc. and the second week up there, 1 less day of taking off from work, but getting back right before Christmas???

If we're able to go, this is pretty much the kids Christmas present and then some and only a couple of things under the tree this time. I ALWAYS go overboard for Xmas with tons of presents under the tree with things they don't even play with. SUCH A WASTE OF MONEY!!! I would spend hundreds without even realizing it. I LOVE Christmas!!! I'd rather use that money towards a family vacation. At least this year! Chat Icon

ETA: We don't go away for Xmas, we ALWAYS stay home! Chat Icon

Re: Disney in December?

From what I have read the week of 12/11 is less crowded so for me that would be a big motivator.

I would go the earlier time. You will have less crowds and better chance for warmer weather.

Re: Disney in December?

I would go the earlier week too. Disney is really festive the entire month of December so better to go when less lines. If you can make the Very Merry Xmas Party you should definitely try--it's only on certain days but really fun.

Most definitely earlier! The closer to the actual holiday, the more busy the parks.

The Christmas Parade will be taping Dec 2nd and 3rd so the Christmas tree will already be up at Magic Kingdom for the first week - they have to leave it down until after the taping because it gets in the way of the cameras.

It's a magical time to be at Walt Disney World so ENJOY!

Stay far away from Christmas itself. Definitely go the 1st week you were looking at. The crowds will be much lower. It isn't unusual for the parks to close due to being at capacity during Christmas and New Years. The earlier you go in December the lighter the crowds will be and you can enjoy the parks and decorations much easier.

Re: Disney in December?

We went last year 12/10-12/15.

The previous year we went on halloween week. I felt it was pretty crowded in December, and it was COLD.

But if you are absolutely doing it one of those weeks, I say the first. I have heard though that early January is a good time to go if you want to give them the trip for christmas (you could do a few themed gifts and see if htey can guess what their "big present" is) and then go after.

not sure your scheduling, but i would consider this. last year we went for MLK wknd and got a great deal too! they had free dining and we stayed at a disney hotel for the free transportation. yes, it was cold most days and needed a jacket, but there were sooo many rides that we literally walked right on. no wait whatsoever. ive never been in january before, and im used to waiting 20 minutes to 3 hours for some rides, so to have no lines was really a luxury! i would def recommend january!

Re: Disney in December?

How cold is it in January in Disney? Are the Christmas decorations still up? If we go, it would be the first week of January or December 11. Now I can't decide??? After Christmas would be better financially and time off wise from work and school??? Not sure.... Chat Icon I just don't want it to be in the 30-40's during the day. Not with a 1 yr old.

Re: Disney in December?

I went last year Jan 6 or 7 (cant remember) and it was awesome.

It was 70's during the day (2 days were low 80's) and one of the days was cooler..low 60's. But I loved that weather. We would start off with sweatshirts in the morning and usually end up being in long sleeve t's or t shirts by late afternoon.

At night it would get a bit chillier but nothing too bad.

Maybe we lucked out because some people say it can get very chilly at night, we had a milder week though. And the christmas decorations were up..it was beautiful. Trying to convince DH to book another trip this year for the same time!!

Christmas decorations come down during the first week of January so it would be iffy as to whether you'd see them or not.

January (one of our favorite times to go) is usually layers and if you have littles, bring mittens/gloves and hats because they're crazy expensive.

We went in January a couple of years ago....January 18-25th and the weather was GREAT! I personally HATE hot weather....we wore short sleeves during the day and jackets at night. It was perfect! Crowds were sparse too

We've been there many times on 12/11 (it's DH's birthday and our engagement date there) and it's definitely my favorite time of the year at Disney.

How cold is it in January in Disney? .

HOnestly you are going during the winter its a c%^pshoot either way. We went last year on Dec 10th....it was FREEZING all but 2 days! I mean winter coats, hats, layers like 30 degrees! My nieces & nephews didnt even make it to the fireworks at night because it was too cold for them! So January vs December...could be good 70 degrees or 30 degrees either way!

Go earlier. When more people are off the more crowded it is.

Re: Disney in December?

Definitely earlier. The later you go in December, the more crowded it is. I think it starts getting bad from the 18th or so on. We're going Dec 4-11 this year. So excited.

I LOVE Disney in December!

As others said the weather is a crapshoot. We have gone twice in January and once in December before and we've seen temps from 35-85. You have to pack for anything and wear layers.

I've been there that exact week. It's great. It's a little busy coming off of Thanksgiving weekend, but it's otherwise fine. I was actually at MK during the parade taping and while getting up and down Main Street was kind of tough, the rest of the park really wasn't too crowded.

We have gone the first week of December twice now and the weather and crowds are nearly perfect. One day of rain, in both trips.
