Stag Party?

Hi! I'm new to this site and haven't posted much, but I recently heard about a stag party and thought you all would be a great way to get opinions on it!

In case you haven't heard of them, a stag party is for men getting married. Basically, his groomsmen plan and arrange it all; they rent out a hall, purchase food/drinks, raffle prizes, and sell tickets to get people to come. The stag party I know of charged I believe $35 a ticket, which included the food and drinks. The groomsmen each get several tickets that they are expected to sell to pretty much anyone they know. It's like a fundraiser for the groom. I heard that this guy had his friends selling tickets to their co-workers, his mom sold tickets to her co-workers, and tickets were sold to people's neighbors. If people can't attend, they are asked to make a "donation".

So the stag party was Saturday night...with the tickets, raffle tickets, and donations, the groom made $1600!!!! This is in addition to the bride having a shower AND all the money they'll get at their wedding, PLUS them both having bachelor/ette parties!!!!

Has anyone heard of this before?!?! It sounds pretty tacky to me, especially when I heard the bride and the wives of the groomsmen talking trash about one guy who "didn't even sell tickets".

Re: Stag Party?

I think that is pretty ridiculous! I mean if a guy wants to have a small party with his friends (a bachelor party) OK. But to have a party with the intention of just collecting $$$, thats just wrong.

ugh, since wedding become a time to collect all the possible gifts and cash you can??Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon

Re: Stag Party?

I always thought the term "stag party" was just an old school way of saying bachelor party.

I've never heard of this before but to me it sort of sounds like the equivalent to a bridal shower only instead of giving material gifts the guests are basically bringing monetary gifts in the form of selling tickets.

I'm not sure I'd say it's tacky, since I see the correlation between this and a shower but I will say it's not very common around here.

You wouldn't happen to be from the Great Lakes area? These types of parties are popular there. They're also know as Stag & Drags, Stag & Doe, or Jack & Jill parties. Generally people from outside that area have never heard of them.
