Do you pronounce it Italia or Italy?

Had a house full of europeans from France the other day and when I asked what other places you guys have been to they all said Italia. Plus many other counties and I was telling them I know lot's of people in the US that never left the state they were born in and you guys have been all over the world.

I haven't heard many people pronounce Italy Italia but it sure sounds like a nice place to visit Chat Icon

How do you and your family pronounce it?

I say Italy. My great grandparents were off the boat from Italy and called it Italia, my grandfather was first generation American and said It-lee. Chat Icon

Um, it depends on what language I'm speaking and who my audience is Chat Icon. If I'm speaking in Spanish or to my Italian inlaws, I will say Italia. If I'm speaking in English, I will say Italy.

I've been there quite a few times. I'll pronounce it either way. I guess it depends on what context I'm speaking in and who I'm speaking with. In almost every other language, it's said "Italia." I believe that English is the only language that calls it "Italy."

Re: Do you pronounce it Italia or Italy?

if your from ITaly, then italia, if you are from here Italy. Its confusing but we say, United States, if your from France, you call it Etats-Unis and my relatives in Norway call it Norge, but we call it Norway. Basically, countries are pronounced differently in differently languages.

I call it Italy. Unless I'm there or speaking to someone from there IN ITALIAN, in which case I'd say "Italia".

I actually call Norway "Norge" and Poland "Polska", only because they sound way cooler that way than the English way to say it! Chat Icon

Oh, and "Doytsch-land" instead of Germany! Chat Icon

Exactly!

I am not sure why your French friends would call it Italia either--In French it is l'Italie.

Re: Do you pronounce it Italia or Italy?

However it is pronounced in the language that you are speaking.

My mom is from Germany and unless she is speaking German - it's Germany, not Deutschland.

DH is from Spain and I don't think I have ever heard him use Espana when speaking English - unless it was last summer in reference to world cup! I have heard DH say "Alemania" (Germany in Spanish) when speaking Spanish to his family - referring to Germany. I can't see him using "Germany" or "Deutschland" (especially) if he is speaking Spanish. KWIM?

Re: Do you pronounce it Italia or Italy?

French people call Italy... Italie!!!! Italia is trying to speak italian which there is no reason to if they don't speak to italians. They should either say Italy if speaking to americans or at least in French.... Italie!
