Re: looking for honest epidural answers

I didn't feel it going in or coming out. I think the contractions masked any pain there may have been

I never got queezy

I was offered pain killers and I didn't like them. Next time I will do the epi sooner.

Re: looking for honest epidural answers

Before I got the epidural, they gave me demoral (sp?) for the pain--I thought it worked well, but not for long.

When I got the epidural, it was a little painful, but I was so preoccupied with the pain of the contractions, I really did not give it much thought. As well, all I kept thinking was "as soon as this is done, I will feel so much better" and believe you me, I did!

1- Does getting the epidural hurt?

2- Did it make you quesey or throw up?

3- Was anything else offered to you besides the epi?

I was terrified about this... I am a big baby and completely afraid of pain.

1. No. It was a little pinch for the novicaine and I barely felt the epidural.

2. Not at all.

3. I had a c-section so I had a spinal/epi mixed

I was so anxious about receiving it because I was shaking from the IV and was having contractions and I didn't know how I was going to stay still. Well my nurse told me that if I am nervous that I can't have it so I stayed still through shaking and contractions and it didnt hurt one bit and the only side effect I had was being itchy. I have a tatoo and I thought getting the tatoo hurt not the epi.

1- Does getting the epidural hurt? Didn't hurt me at all, and it took them a while to get it in, I remember going through 3 contractions UGH!

2- Did it make you quesey or throw up? No , but I did get the shakes/chills - they told me that was totally normal - I couldn't stop shaking.

3- Was anything else offered to you besides the epi? No

I don't know why but I'm having aniexty attacks about getting a giant needle put in my spine. Any words to calm my fears?

I'm the BIGGEST baby when it comes to needles. In all seriousness, I used to get panic attacks at the doctor's office, pass out and start shaking uncontrollably because that's how worked up I would get myself, so the IV and Epi were the two biggest fears of mine. I wanted a natural childbirth, not because I'm a huge proponent of it, but because I though I would rather deal with the pain of childbirth than deal with the needle! But, in the end, the contractions were so painful, I couldn't avoid it (I had back labor). I did feel the needle but it didn't hurt - it just felt weird like something was going into my spine nad then I felt a very cold, liquid sensation. I'll admit, I freaked out a little and started crying, especially because DH couldn't be with me in the room at the time, but it really wasn't all that bad. My only reaction was the shaking - normal reaction.

Re: looking for honest epidural answers

Didn't hurt for me - a little pinch, and then I could feel a twinge like a nerve being hit. But not a big deal at all.

Yes, it made me nauseous and I threw up twice. It wasn't bad though - the nauseousness I mean. It didn't last long and I felt better after I threw up (but I lost all my delicious jello! Chat Icon )

They offered me some other kind of pain meds in the IV first, and I tried it but it didn't do a thing (I can't remember the name of it).

Getting the epidural was great - DH was watching my contractions on the monitor and was like, "WOW! That one was HUGE! Did you feel anything?" And I was like, "nope!"

But I had a vaginal birth, and I'll tell you that the epidural does NOT block the pain of pushing.....still, pushing only hurt at the very end and the pain didn't last long.

1- Does getting the epidural hurt?

Not one bit. Maybe a quick pinch, but the contractions I had were killer and I was so ready for it. The relief was instant! I didn't see anything while the anest. put it in and I had it on the entire time, until I pushed her out.

2- Did it make you quesey or throw up?

Nope, I felt a little warm adn tingly sensation, but it was like heaven!

3- Was anything else offered to you besides the epi?

No.

1- Does getting the epidural hurt? No - the contractions hurt more!

2- Did it make you quesey or throw up?I didn't throw up.

3- Was anything else offered to you besides the epi? Stadal (sp?) It was a temporary pain reliever that helped me rest and sleep better between contractions

Don't worry - you will be fine. The only focus on your mind will be delivering that baby any way you know how - the thought of a needle won't even cross your mind when you are feeling contractions. Good luck to you!

Re: looking for honest epidural answers

For me, it really didn't hurt that much. I think my anxiety about it and about having to have an emergency c-section made it worse than it actually was. The needle that they use really isn't that big. It is a "little pinch" and some pressure but totally worth it. I had no choice, because I had a c-section, but if I had a regular delivery I would opt for it as well. I had NO adverse reactions from it. No itching, headaches, vomiting, etc...

1- Does getting the epidural hurt?
YES, IT HURT A LITTLE BUT IT WAS MORE OF A PINCH WHEN THEY INSERTED THE NEEDLE. BUT SO WORTH IT WHEN IT KICKED IN

2- Did it make you quesey or throw up?
YES, IT WAS THE ONLY TIME I THREW UP DURING MY PREGNANCY.

3- Was anything else offered to you besides the epi?
NOPE, I KNEW I WANTED THAT.

Re: looking for honest epidural answers

the first time around, I was so panicked about it and waited way too long - the pain medicine they gave me because I wanted "just a little something to take the edge off" was MUCH worse than the epidural (it was called Stadol). After the epi was in, everything was good. With #2, I still waited a while, but this time just about 20 minutes too long - and again, after I received it, I was able to enjoy the whole thing so much more. It is VERY scary and frustrating at first to not be able to feel or move your legs, but DH was good at helping me get comfortable. I would absolutely get it again. I had no headaches or side effects. The pain going in was minimal.

Re: looking for honest epidural answers

My water broke and I had no contractions. Because I had group b strep, they had to induce labor. They asked if I wanted the Epi right away. THANK GOD I SAID YES.. I did not feel one ounce of pain the entire time (25 hours in labor), expect for 20 minutes while I was 7 centimeters dilated.. The anastigiologist was in a c-section adn I had to wait 20 minutes. IT WAS UNBEARABLE. I told DH I was going to get up and walk out of the hospital! :)) When they finally uped the epi, I was fine. Even pushing didn't hurt.

I WOULD NEVER HAVE A BABY WITHOUT IT. THANK GOD FOR EPI's! :)

See, I experienced both (no pain, and a small part of my body where it wore off , so I know the difference). I would higly recommend getting it.

Now, to answer your questions. No, it didn't hurt going in. Maybe a small pinch.

No, I was not quesy.

NO, I was not offered anything else, I didn't need it. :)

Re: looking for honest epidural answers

I have NO tolerence for pain so I knew I wanted an epi way in advance. It did not hurt going in. a small pinch, thats it - not painful at all. I didnt have any side effects like feeling queasy or anything like that. They also offered me Demerol but I dont like that "drugged up" feeling so I passed. I would do the epi again next time for sure. The relief it provides from the pain of contractions is amazing! hope this helps.
