I think this is great! I might even throw in a little extra if you can afford it. You know here-she watched your neice and nephew, she is reliable, trustworthy etc. You can't put a price on thatChat Icon

ITA Definitely cover her LIRR expenses at least!

If you decide you don't want her, send her my way in february LOL

Just kidding. I would give her $600/wk and just tell her that is to cover the LIRR
My concern for you/her would be how rarely the Babylon branch stops at Forest Hills in the morning. She will likely have to get a train to Jamaica, then the subway to FH so it's not just the LIRR she would need

this is exactly my issue and it never occurred to me b/c on the weekends it's local and always stops at forest hills. my BIL is convinced she won't want to change at Jamaica and there is like a 6:10am train in the morning where she wouldn't have to. According to my sister she's concerned about getting home late. ugh. we are supposedly going to do a trial run so she can see what the commute is like when the weather gets a little better.

I honestly would pay her more and I'm totally on board with paying for her LIRR ticket. I figure I can start her at what she's making since she'd only be working a few months this year and as of the new year I'd give her a raise.

I really hope this works out. Chat Icon

That is the cheapest nanny I've heard of in NY. You should definitely cover the cost of the LIRR.

That is a very very good deal
My sister pays 400 a week, but its for a live-in
and she works 50-60 hours a week and cooks and cleans, and does all the laundry for the entire family. This is for a toddler and infant twins

I'm sorry but this is horrible. This woman is really being taken advantage of.

I have to agree. This is really sad. I guess some people really need a job to accept so little pay for so much work.

I could be wrong here but if your paying 400 and she has free room and board how is that slavery. A place to live costs at least 1000 right?

are you kidding?

it's FREE ROOM AND BOARD.. meaning they don't pay rent, electric, cable, or any utilities and don't pay for food! ETA that mine even went away with me on vacation and she was off the clock (meaning i was watching the kids 99.9% of the time)

It's a great deal for you, I cannot believe she wouldn't want to be paid more though. I watched a little boy in my house Mon - Thurs from 7:30 to 3:30 and was paid $360/week.

Agreed. That's crazy that anyone would do that amount of work and watch that many kids for sooo little money. Your sister is getting quite a deal with that nanny.

I disagree. She is getting free room and board, that alone is thousands of dollars. Plus $400 a week sounds very good to me.

ITA with this. Hell, I'd LOVE to be making $400 a week with someone paying my room and board...and I'm a TEACHER! How is $400 a week plus meals and a place to live considered SLAVERY?! Chat Icon

I love all the judgements on this thread

I am glad some people realize that its not.
the woman doesn't have any expenses except a cell phone, even her toiletries are paid for. All her food, even special foods she likes are bought for her.
and its 400 cash thats almost 21k a year take home.

Re: if you have a nanny (please tell me if this is reasonable)

Sorry , but even with room and board 400 is too little to take care of the whole family, if it was just the kids I'd say that's a great , but to clean and cook for the whole family + 3 kids -especially 2 infant twins , that's just too little (plus as I mentioned in my PP when you work as a live in nanny it's very hard to get a break, it's almost like having a 24/7 job)
Being a FT nanny (live in or live out) is a VERY hard job and I don't think some people really understand or get it.

maybe you should quit teaching and become a FT live in nanny for a little bit and then see how you feel about it Chat Icon

Sounds like great deal to me, I would definitely offer her more though.

As far as her being taken advantage of, shes a grown woman who can make her own choices, no one is forcing her to work there. She sounds well taken care of and must be very happy and love the family to be so excited to get to stay within the family.

That was my exact situation only that I paid for my nanny's cell phone as well..(only we paid ours $450/week)

my nanny was part of my family.. and i wasn't sitting on the couch eating bon bons while she catered to our every request.. we worked together as a family...that's not including any bonuses we gave her, paid for any trips to see her family (she moved OOS with us) or trips we went on that we paid for her to go with us to (not to watch our kids but to be on vacation) or any other help we gave her.. she lived in the upstairs master bedroom with master bath in my house... she had a beautiful set-up..

Not sure if this is a better option.... A monthly to Jamaica is only $193. Then she can subway it to Forest Hills.

If she is working 60 hours a week and only getting $400 she's making 6.67 an hour which is below the $7.25 an hour minimum in NY.

That doesn't even address the fact she is going over 40 hours a week and could qualify for OT.

That's an amazing deal! I am currently looking into nanny's for the same length of time and it is more like $750 a week Chat Icon

Yeah from what I know this is more in line with what experienced nannies get paid for those hours so I would hop on that in a heartbeat!

You're getting a good deal!

ITA. While I realize that most nannies work off the books, your proposal violates wage laws. Plus, even if you were paying her minimum wage with applicable overtime, the market rate for nannies is higher than minimum wage. If she is smart, she will figure out she is making way below market rate in addition to the fact that it seems like she will have a pretty crappy commute.

Your sister is really USING the woman, I don't care that the woman gets room and board, food and toiletries... for someone to hire a "live in nanny" , have her do all the household chores + take care of 3 kids toddler and twin infants and pay her 400 ! that's just taking advantage of someone... the nanny must be really desperate to work for that little pay and I feel sorry for her..
OP I think 400 is waaaayyy too little and I hope the woman doesn't agree to it for her own sake and if she does I really hope that you reconsider and pay her at least 500 a week and commute...
