Could be. I think if anything it's on the DSNY side though. This is one way to call a LOT of attention to those demotion/staffing issues. It only makes the mayor look bad.

Though I wanted to PUNCH him when he SHRUGGED while talking about how emergency vehicles can't get to everyone who needs them

demotions begin jan 1st 2011.

ahh thank you.

that's so terrible. so they are still supervising then. i can't believe they went through with it. if they HAD to demote them, OK... but WHY make them the bottom guys?? All in all it's good for my sani husband and he and I both still think it's wrong and messed up.

was someone you know a supervisor? I don't think many know this was happening.

yes and i'm just giving another side to the story. i'm not saying that the slow down theory is fact because i don't know for sure. it's just something that has been floating around.

if they did a slow down... the higher ups would have to be doing it too bc they are the ones in charge of calling in the sani workers before a storm.
the supervisors... they have no control over that.. they would get called in the same way a reg sani worker would get called into work.

and by higher ups... i mean commissioner and mayor..... idk if they would be involved in a slow down because it would be their jobs and reps on the line....

I don't think it's a slow down or the demotions to blame. i really just think the mayor and commissioner dropped the ball BEFORE the storm started.

ETA: the guys out there on the streets working would have to be the ones slowing down the work... and i can see on my DH's face that is not the case at all. He has been working hard and was not told to do otherwise. Also, the demotions... he mentioned that to me when it first came out... never again did he mention it... it wasn't even on the front burner... I actually forgot all about it. If that was the case he would have been talking about much more and he wouldn't be so tired after working these shifts... nor would he have the stories to tell that he does of what happened in his shift.

and they def wouldn't fight the hiring freeze because the alternative was layoffs... they would rather not hire than to layoff the guys already on the job. when presented with the alternative they are happy about the hiring freeze. ideally though they would like to have it lifted without the threat of layoffs... back to the way it used to be before the budget cuts...

i think it goes hand in hand between the commissioner and the mayor... i'm pretty sure in order for the commissioner to call in ALL dsny workers to work OT they have to have an approval and a state of emergency to do so... that would come from the mayor. I don't know for sure... but I can't see the commissioner having the capability of deciding the budget portion of it all. I think it's a two way job...

Re: Anyone else in nyc NOT have their street plowed?T

I just got home after being stranded in Brooklyn since Sunday. My coworkers and I have been staying over, working 16+ hour shifts, and I still can't believe that the streets AROUND A HOSPITAL are still not plowed. Sure the main roads are OK now, but many of the side streets are waist deep in snow. Monday I walked over a mile from the subway to get to work on unshoveled sidewalks and through unplowed streets. I don't know how I made it, I seriously thought that I was going to lose my toes from frostbite.

My hats off to all the EMS workers who have been digging trucks out, carrying patients blocks in the snow before they can even get to their trucks.

We just got home from staying at the IL's since we actually lost power. Holy cow, the main road is beautiful. You can see pavement. The side roads...Chat Icon wow. Just wow! They have not been touched! Other roads that are normally 2 lanes are one lane roads.

I'm sorry, but I've lived in Queens for a while now. We have had snow many times before. This is NOT our first blizzard living here and snow is NOT new to NYC. What on earth happened this time? Chat Icon

Update in Marine Park Bklyn - main roads (Avenues) have been cleared as of this morning 8:30 a.m. The side streets, yeah - not so much.

I placed a call into my State Senator Marty Golden and they actually called me back and took all my information.
