Ugh they do this at my moms house too because of the cesspool.

I hate it. I flush all the time anyway! And I have sewers so I flush after I blow my nose and throw the tissue in the toilet, lol.

We flush no matter what. I dont want to come into the bathroom and see anything hanging out in there from the previous night.

I don't know whose house it is, but if it's yours, it's non-negotiable.

In my house, you flush. (although the kids do forget...but they have to stop whatever they're doing, go back & flush).

Re: The "if it's yellow let it mellow" debate

I have to say, when I was preggo, I did the same thing because I didn't want to wake DS and DH

BUT we were the only ones using that bathroom!!

I would never do that if I was sharing a bathroom with anyone other than Dh and the kids

eta: I guess I'm grossChat Icon Chat Icon

in my defense though, I was the only one really using the bathroom overnight and would be the first one in in the morning to flush so no one else was exposed to my pee

Honestly, I worked for the Water Authority while I was in college, and I learned that we waste 6 gallons of water every time we flush. I don't flush if it's just me and DH in the house. If there are other people though, I make sure to flush.

ETA: I also close the lid!

I grew up not flushing overnight bc the toilet was right behind my sister's head.

HOWEVER, if we were sharing a home with someone - then, I would flush!!!!

Re: The "if it's yellow let it mellow" debate

I would just say to them...
"it's not the flushing that wakes me up... it's the slamming of the toilet bowl seat."

What difference does it make if the flushing wakes you up if you are already being woken up by the slamming of the seat??

I know if conserves water not to but I always flush. IL's don't flush when they pee which is fine but when I visit and use the bathroom, I have to flush before hand

We always flush, but we have to leave the lid up bc our kitties drink straight from the bowl, no matter how many times I try to get them to use a water bowl Chat Icon

Home Dept sells these great toilet seats that don't slam down. We have them and I love it.
I also say FLUSH. I am pregnant too and flush 4 times a night. It does not bother anyone.

Re: The "if it's yellow let it mellow" debate

Flush, always flush.

If I was your DH, since the lid is closed and he doesn't have to see it anyway, I would just flush before I lift the lid.

Err on the side of caution (caution being that there is a good chance of pee under the lid).

If DH and I have to use the bathroom around the same time we will always tell the other one that we'll 'pee on your pee'...that's the only time we let it mellow though haha.

Pretty much the same thing here. When we wake up in the morning and right before we go to bed, we pee right after each other and then flush.

Re: The "if it's yellow let it mellow" debate

im usually not one bothered by things that other people find gross, but this is definitely an exception to that rule!

i too am super sensitive to pee smell.. so much that dh knows to try and avoid it if im in the shower in the morning. i just can't stand the smell of it.. so the thought of leaving pee in the toilet is just gross to me.

i can understand due to septic system issues, but that doesn't seem to be the issue in this case.

i wasn't clear if you were living in their house, or if they were living in your house. If its your house, then you have every right to ask if they can respect your rules. However if you're living in their house.. its a somewhat different story. maybe you and DH should just get used to the fact that you will always have to flush the toilet before you go, in order to keep the peace.

My dual flush only uses .8 gallons for pee.... Chat Icon

A 1995 Federal law dictates that new toilets can only use 1.6 gallons per flush. The 6 gallon number is from the older toilets.

For some reason if my sis and BIl discuss going to the bathroom and decide they both have to go, the first won't flush - they'll wait for the 2nd to go.

Well, about 2 weeks ago, my sis did her business but BIL got distracted.

A few minutes later they heard my 1 y/o nephew playing in the toilet water....
hopefully, now the flush.

If they already compromised on the lid recently, I'd consider if this is a battle you want to fight right now. You are their guests and it is their home, so although you should find ways to coexist peacefully, I think it's a delicate situation when you ask your hosts to change their ways for you. Perhaps you could find something else to compromise for them, to help the situation when you bring it up.

it's not their home, it all of our home that we rent together... so what is the rule there... who has the final say lol?

They do. And you do. Not necessarily in that order. Chat Icon

In situations where it's equal like that, I choose my battles and make sure it's a fairly even give-and-take. When was the conversation about the toilet seat cover? Could you celebrate Festivus and have an airing of grievances? Chat Icon
