varicocele?
Ladies, if your DH had any experience with varicocele, please talk to me. How was it diagnosed? How was it treated? Is surgery the only way to treat it?

My DH was diagnosed with varicocele. After 2 semen analyses came back with very low morphology, he saw a urologist. They took a sonogram and diagnosed that he had bilateral varicocele. They recommended surgery, but we opted for a non-surgical option called embolization. It is less invasive, minimal cost and much less recovery time, which was a big factor for us because DH does not get paid when he doesn't work. Estimated recovery from surgery was 4-6 weeks. Also, his work is very active and they did not recommend such high level of activity for 4-8 weeks. We just couldn't afford for him to be out for that long. Anyway, the embolization did not work for him There were no guarantees and we knew that going in.
So with our IVF treatments we have always done ICSI.

Sorry to intrude but how low is low? My DH's 2nd SA came back with a morph of 5 and my RE said that is on the low end of what they consider to be acceptable (5-11).

my dh was recently diagnised with varicocele. he saw dr gilbert who we were referred to by dr rosenfeld. we were told surgery is an option for long term but considering after 3 iui's we are moving to ivf he said it wasnt necessary to have the surgery. i was told if you are trying naturally then you should do surgery, if you are doing ivf not something that has to be done asap.

count 10 mil
motility 19%
morphology 7%
motility is horrible they want it over 60%

yes, this is correct. If you are doing IVF, no treatment is needed, i was told this as well. but I am trying to avoid IVF at this point, thus looking for solutions.

oh ok....sorry bout that.
from what i was told surgery if the only way but isnt 100% guarantee. its also a few months of healing...going back for SA every month. then again i didnt find the dr gilberts office that helpful either when i was asking my questions. wish i could be more helpful. We are still indecided if dh should go in for this as well.

hello ladies...I am new to this board, but I wanted to contribute. My husband was diagnosed with unilateral varicocele, confirmed on Friday. We are going with the surgery..here is the journey so far, if you have any questions at all please FM me. He will be having the surgery on Nov. 4th, so I can fill you in if you want more details:
Here goes: TTC for 1.5 years, DH went for SA in Aug. results came back "abnormal" but they didn't give me his #s, went for the 2nd SA in Sept. Told to see the urologist his #s were: Concentration-0.5 million (or 500,000), motility 9%. I am sure you all know that "Normal" is concentration 20million and 50% motility...
Saw Dr. Schoor (in smithtown) diagnosed DH within 5 min. and immediately made me feel better, he communicated with us as a couple, answered all of our questions, really put us at ease...sent for a sonogram to confirm, blood tests to check his hormone levels and an additional SA. The surgery is scheduled for Nov4. 30 min out patient surgery. IF my DH had an office job the Dr. said he could go back to work on Monday, but since he is a firefighter he will be out for 10-14 days. The surgery may increase his count by 70% but it is not a guarantee. Although without the surgery it could get worse. Sperm rejuvenate is~ 72 days, so after 3 months we will attempt to conceive naturally, if after I am still not pregnant, he recommends IUI. This is only if the surgery increases his count to 5million. IF after the 6months it is still not up to 5million, then we will have to go to IVF.
I feel like I have just typed a lot and haven't helped much, but if you have any questions please FM me I will be happy to share my experience and let you know how it works. Bottom line is that it was posed to us that the surgery may help, but if we didn't have the surgery we would have a nearly impossible chance of conceiving naturally on our own. HTH...
